September 7th, 2021 is the scheduled released date for the 4K UHD Universal Pictures release of 1982's The Thing by John Carpenter.
Depends on how old the player is. Newer machines ( not 4K ) will play them but just not in 4K.
I still laugh when I remember the entire theater screaming...
American Werewolf in London came out around then, too, I think. ANother great flick, but with a comedic twist too.
I saw that when I was a boy. Scared me for a long time. Years later I couldn’t believe it was the good man of the law of Gunsmoke.
Probably the greatest suspense thriller of all time. Carpenter wouldnt even to this day say the ENDING if Chiles or McReady is an alien or not just to screw with us..
“”Has anyone seen 2011’s The Thing?”
It’s widely hated by fans of the original. And I personally know (in my line of work) they had over 10 re-writes and post production re-shoots. It was not really meant to be told as the recorded videos bought by Doc and McReady was enough.
The final scene of "Prince..." (you can find it on YouTube) still gives me chills.
And Carpenter's "The Thing" is one of the greatest horror films ever.
What happened to Carpenter? Some great films in the 80s followed by mostly mediocre bombs.

Not sure, maybe he just got burned out. He had the Creative Blitz for a while, then... But - he left us some great ones, for sure.
Next time you watch the original, pay attention to the script. It’s one of the best screenplays ever written. Too bad James Arness didn’t have any lines.
Agreed. I even like the title better: It captures the uncertainty and fear of the men at the station.
I think the last line of the movie was from the reporter who said over the broadcast “Keep Watching The Skies”.
After you buy the 2-disc set (I ordered mine from Universal’s site GRUV and got offered a 20% off first order promo) then you can play the Blu-ray disc that comes in the set, and later, when you eventually upgrade to 4K, that 4K UHD disc will be the one you’ll want to play.
Some 1080p discs have been made from films being scanned in 4K, and you can play those discs in your player too.
Ok, thank you!
John Carpenter also did Aliens, which I think was a great follow up to the original.
My fave Carpenter film....Vampires. He did some great movies.
I was 8 in ‘51 and saw The Thing at a theater with my aunt. Scared the crap out of me. BTW James Arness was the thing.
Musta been the Drive-In. VW made ugly cars.
I remember reading it as a kid (before the movie) late at night. I couldn't sleep for several days after that.
I knew a woman that had one of those VWs. Ugly is kind.
The car, not the woman.
