A California man on a boat on the Colorado River was ... sitting on the back of the boat’s swim deck when the wreck occurred Sunday
The personal watercraft left the scene but lifeguards and boating officers were able to locate it, resulting in citation of the operator, a 16-year-old boy from Avondale, Arizona, for failure to use due caution to avoid a collision and rental contract violation, the department said.

Why not hit-and-run, manslaughter, etc.?

There is an Ontario in CA and an Ontario in a different CA Yes, but is there a CACA river in both places, or is that you and your refritos again??

Why not hit-and-run, manslaughter, etc.? These are just the initial charges.
There will probably be more.

This sounds like a jetski or something similar. I know when I'm out in my boat these testosterone driven punks on jetskis are an absolute nuisance. Unsafely cutting in front of my boat and coming way too close. I am very thankful that the smallish lake I live on and usually boat on banned these things.
Heck, 16 years old!! If I were king it would be 25 years old at the youngest to let them rent these things.
With all that said, I'm quite sure there are very polite and courteous young people that have parents that tell everyone that their little Johnny "is a good boy" but that adrenaline rush along with the testosterone can drive "good little Johnny" to do out of character things.

My friend just sold his longtime owned lakehouse and built a paradise out in the country because a quiet putt on the pontoon boat was no longer enjoyable

The new PWCs are boats with handlebars. The whole industry up-sized to make them safer for operators when they crash. They weigh nearly 1000 lbs and will do 60+ mph. High output models weigh nearly 1400 and can do over 90mph. Compare with earlier PWCs which weigh around 400 and go about 45 mph. The performance models do about 60 mph.
Letting anyone under 18 operate a newer PWC is criminal. What’s next, renting F-350 ‘go-carts’ for the open road?

Happens all the time round here.
You all will note the stories linked just to the right side?
And, if you’ve ever been on the water along those areas, you would see why this happens. The Indy 500 aint got nothing on these jackasses running up and down that river on those things. Those and the speed boats.

I might end up in Havasu someday, if I finally decide to leave the wrong side of the Colorado River.
