Florida wasn’t one of the original 13 colonies, but it was British, having been ceded by Spain to Britain at the conclusion of he Third Silesian War in 1763. At the time of the Revolution, a large portion of the small British population in Florida consisted of military personnel and government officials, and they remained loyal to the king.

In 1781, the Spaniards won a major victory over the British at Fort George in Pensacola, but because this battle involved no American troops, it often goes unmentioned in American histories of the war.
