That stuff has been growing crazy in the front yard where I had a large Tulip Poplar tree cut down. I hit a piece of it with the lawn mower and it sounded like I had hit a rock.

Don't depend on the leftists at the BBC tp give you pertinent information.
They do write nice general interest articles, but not once is the name of the fungus given, Inonotus obliquus.
The fruiting body is not really a "mushroom," but a sclerotium of a basidiomycete. One Russian thinks it could be used against Covid:
