Imagine waking up each morning knowing the identities of thousands of people who are about to be mugged for thousands of dollars each. You know exactly when and where each of those muggings will take place, and you’ve shared this information in advance with the authorities each day for a year with no outward indication that they are doing anything about it. How frustrated would you be?
Roughly a year ago, B. Ware’s group started sharing its intelligence with fraud investigators at FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service — the primary delivery mechanisms for these counterfeit checks.
“It’s so much information that they really don’t want it anymore and they’re not doing anything about it,” B. Ware said of FedEx and the USPS. “It’s almost like they’re turning a blind eye. There are so many of these checks going out each day that instead of trying to drink from the firehouse, they’re just turning their heads.”
Tokazowski said he’s taken his share of flack from people on social media who say his focus on West African nations as the primary source of these advanced fee and BEC scams is somehow racist [KrebsOnSecurity experienced a similar response to the 2013 stories, Spy Service Exposes Nigerian ‘Yahoo Boys’, and ‘Yahoo Boys’ Have 419 Facebook Friends].

This crap is everywhere, I get calls from the IRS, Social Security, Amazon... about once a week.
Who will rid me of the meddlesome scum?
I don't care if the trains are on time but would like to not be bothered by fake phone calls.
The FBI is too busy looking for imaginary white supremacist extremists, or trying to create them by entrapment (think Randy Weaver), to actually do the hard work of taking out scum like this.
We are in a Communist Revolution. The Swamp wants the economy to crash and the middle class to get crushed. They build on the tyranny from there. They are currently increasing the money supply at 38% . That is bad enough but after the resultant inflation hits they will likely push that rate up even further. Think Venezuela.
Anyhow, law firm contacts "debtor" who agrees to pay up and sends a check. Check is deposited into law firm's trust account. "Creditor" contacts law firm and begs for immediate funds to be wired on account of some emergency. Firm is told they can keep some % of the money as a bonus for accommodating the request. Money is wired out, check later bounces. This usually involves much more money, $40-$50K or even up to $100K.
And for the umpteenth time, government agencies do not initiate contact by phone. They are still in the stone age and the initial contact will be by snail mail.
Don’t deposit (possible phony) checks.
And don’t ask your bank to verify if it is authenticate — your bank manager will tell you that you have to deposit first, then wait for several business days for it to clear (or NOT). Of course it won’t.
Instead, call the bank manager of the issuing check. The manager will immediately tell you of the fraudulent check, usually with fraudulent check number, or some other flaw (no branch address provided on the check), etc.
I no longer get any of those scam calls. They put me on their do not call list it appears. I guess they got tired of me wasting their time messing with them for fun.
STIR/Shaken is on the way where in the next couple of years, you’ll have assurance of the source of calls to you. If you have an iPhone, you can set your phone up where if the number isn’t in your list of contacts or you haven’t made an outbound call to it, the call goes directly to your VM. Cuts way down on garbage calls and very few of them will leave a message.
My method is to hav one ringtone for my favorites phone list, one for my contacts list, and the default ringtone for everything else.
That way I can tell just by the ringtone if I can ignore it or not.
Whatever works for you but on my phone, I never know that the scammers even called.
I don’t have a smart phone.
