Great story! I can so relate to this. I too was extremely shy in school, very nerdy and was young for my grade. My father had me skip kindergarten because he thought it was a waste of time.
Played violin and also loved to draw... to top it all off we moved a lot so I was always the new kid in school, the shortest kid in the class and had a different religion than everyone else so was a complete object of ridicule.

Yep. Met him once at a back stage meet and greet after a San Jose concert. We got to do that because in of his room mates from college is a friend. He and I did graduate from SLO the same year and turns out i knew a few of his ex roommates.

Consequently...always been a fan.

Great story about real people.

Nothing "woke" about it.

With Biden trying to kill private transportation, I tuned into Youtube last week to listen to Weird Al's Another One Rides The Bus.

So faithful to the reality of riding the bus with random losers.

Weird Al is a genius. And the best kind of genius...a humble one.

My first thought was what does this have to do with 4th of July Weekend?
Then I thought, well of course i know who Weird Al is, so lets take a look.
It was a very nice walk through his past, in a setting anyone could identify with.

I can certainly believe Al was double promoted. He’s always been unusually perceptive. Al went to the right kind of school, one that allowed him to advance to the level of his measurable intelligence. He was not told to be quiet and curb his privilege.

Part of the beauty of this vignette is the spirit of innocence it transmits, not just in the person of Weird Al many decades ago, but also in his classmate Patrice who apparently cherished that little drawing not just then but well since.

Most of us who felt normal feelings of inadequacy during adolescence should thank God we grew up then and not now - think of those poor kids with woke parents today, kids whose clumsiness and discomfort in such venues gets them sent to hack shrinks who too often are likely to take a guy like Weird Al, explain that his confusion is a reflection of a likely gender dysphoria, and prescribe estrogen treatment followed in the most extreme cases by self-mutilation.

I’m glad to see that Weird Al has had a lucrative and satisfying career - he’s brought joy to his fans over a long period of time, and apparently even as a goofy teenager he learned how to channel his talents into bringing joy to others. Good for him.

I also met him personally after a concert. His performance was flawless and filled with gratitude. He is a consummate showman, fully disciplined, completely engaged with his fans, filled with the charity of Christ, and deserving in every regard of the utmost respect. His physical endurance was astounding. I wish him the utmost success in whatever he does.

It was a wildly different time; almost from a different planet, and certainly from a different culture. Weird Al and I are of the same vintage, and actually attended a pretty great state (!) university at the same time. One of my friends knew him (they were neighbors in the same building), before he made the big time, and said he was a very cool, very quirkly, very friendly guy. Back in the days of the “Doctor Demento” radio show...

True dat. Saw him in concert a few years ago on his “Mandatory Fun” tour. Picked up a T-Shirt with Al morphed into Che Guevara...

Excellent show... I’m thankful to see someone blessed with that kind of talent.

They used to seat my elementary school classrooms by alphabetical order so for several years, I had a girl sitting in front of me who had a last name (Connolly) just before mine in the alphabetical order. She was pretty nice and would hand papers to me as the teacher always started with the front row and had the kids in the front row take a sheet and pass the rest back. I was still too young to have a crush on her but I would not have minded going to a movie with her or something.

Behind me was a boy named Cunningham who was a bit of a troublemaker.
