I have been in the South all my life, so that makes me an expert. Southerners eat fried foods, but they don’t live off it. In fact, fried chicken and chicken fried steak is about all now, on occasion, like Sunday dinner.

And, most assuredly, Southerners aren’t alone in drinking sugary drinks and processed meats. Completely ridiculous.

I grew up in San Antonio, so Tex Mex was all I ate for the first 18 years of my life, well that and Briskets.
Never had a taste for fried stuff, and sweet tea is nasty, just liquefy some sugar and drink it, it would be the same thing.

They’re saying the Mediterranean diet is good and the Southern diet is bad. But didn’t pizza, lasagna and spumoni originate in the Mediterranean? And aren’t okra, string beans and green tomatoes part of the Southern diet?

Let people eat what they want. It's none of the governments business. And start giving kids a whole carton of Whole Milk at school instead of the half cartons.

Sweet Tea in the south is more like syrup. Fried Twinkies, pickles or whatever anyone? Not just breaded and fried but fried in lard.

That’s why my relatives all lived into their nineties. Smoking, drinking, and fried foods. But our do gooders and know it all’s always have to tell us their unsolicited views.

I have to agree with you. My Mom born and raised a Tar Heel (North Carolina) lived to just a couple of months shy of 102. Her parents (Tar Heels) lived to 97 and 94. They ate lots of meat (wild game, chicken, pork) some fried food (fried in pork fat - not oils), desserts always at the ready...fatback (oh no!)... and biscuits every day. There were also fresh garden vegetables every day and lots of physical labor.

IMO the key to fried foods and sugar is moderation. Stay away from soda pop and fast food/processed food, period.
