WASHINGTON, Monday, July 1.
I think I have obtained a sight of the small live coal that made so much compromise smoke a few days since. There has been talk of a compromise, and I have no doubt there is a compromise sentiment in the Cabinet, and in the army, or rather a desire to arrange with the rebel States for a peaceful separation. Those entertaining this feeling sought to ascertain the public pulse, and they put out this compromise suggestion as a feeler -- very much as some good loyal men, acting under Gen. MCDOWELL's orders, send up rockets and alarm our camps, merely to see how they are prepared for such a surprise, in case the other side should come upon us suddenly. I think those who put forward the compromise feeler are not disposed to try the dodge a second time. The popular pulse beats no response.
The contest for the Speakership and the other officers of the House is not to be a protracted struggle. Whatever of contest there is, will terminate on the night of the 3d; for I think the first vote on the 4th will make a choice. The friends of Messrs. BLAIR, GROW and COLFAX appear to be equally sanguine of success. So far as outside popular sentiment goes, it decides in favor of BLAIR -- his late gallant exploits in Missouri and the political sagacity he manifested, giving him a stronghold upon the young and vigorous men of the country.
The majority of the Senate have decided to remove DICKENS from the Clerkship of the Senate.
There is a probability that several of the civil appointments made during the recess of the Senate, will not be confirmed by that body, if their names are sent in.
