DeSantis targets universities for their failures of 'viewpoint diversity'

Florida's Gov. Ron DeSantis is as impressive as they come and his record to show for it continues.

According to an op-ed in the Tampa Bay Times by Scott Gerber, he's now targeting the leftist university monolith.

Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed a bill to protect against indoctrination in the state’s colleges and universities. The new law, which went into effect on July 1, requires Florida’s public colleges and universities to conduct an annual survey measuring “intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity” on their campuses. The law’s goal is to assess “the extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented” and how free students, faculty, and staff feel “to express their beliefs and viewpoints.”

The Florida law does not specify what will be done with the survey results, but Gov. DeSantis suggested that budget cuts could result if universities and colleges are found to be “indoctrinating” students. “It used to be thought that a university campus was a place where you’d be exposed to a lot of different ideas,” DeSantis said. “Unfortunately, now the norm is really these are more intellectually repressive environments.”

It's the intolerable setup that forces taxpayers of all ideological persuasions to fund far-left universities, where only leftists can get hired at them, leaving a great void of "viewpoint diversity." Kids today go to college never hearing a word of conservative thought, and to please their professors and get the 'A's they want, must mouth leftist tropes to pass, because who'd want to take a chance otherwise? Worse still, the lack of ideological diversity serves to drive the viewpoints further and further left, like a bus with no brakes, no checks and balances, no respectable opposition. That explains the state we've gotten to, with university professors the craziest people on the left,

Taxpayers should not be forced to fund this garbage.

This is a good idea but what we need to get to is the inclusion of viewpoint in the “diversity” requirement for faculty and administrator hiring.

That will of course drive Leftists utterly insane because A) it effectively means “Leftists need not apply” for university positions for years and years because they are all monolithically leftist now and B) it uses their own weapon “diversity” against them.

Their howls of pain and anguish will be the cherry on top of what will be a very positive development in Academia.

Absolutely, and kudos to the FL state legislature for getting these sensible laws to his desk.

Exactly, but take it a bit further, to where the ‘Civil Rights’ movement is now - where they assume EVERY person, institution, and company is inherently racist, UNTIL they’re able to prove otherwise.

But at least this is a start...

I am so tired of hearing about “diversity” from the left. They don’t want diversity...they want to stay in control and keep their views the only views allowed. That isn’t diversity and they know it!

You mean that Critical Race Theory is only a - theory? And here so many people deeply believe it is settled fact, unassailable by any application of logic or reason, it just IS.

Dogma from the highest level of academia, and therefore beyond all review or challenge.

And pigs fly.

“university professors the craziest people on the left”

I can vouch for that. I worked for a large university for 34 years before retiring and worked with dozens in academia. As a class, they are about as far to the wacky left as anyone in this country.

Finally.

It amazes me that even in Arizona, the state legislature continues to let the three state “universities” become hostile campgrounds for Americans.

It’s not just “leftist” ideology: In the Southwest, the universities now push the “Stolen Land” meme. They de-legitimize the very existence of the States they take money from.

Why do the legislatures in AZ and TX still give them money with no strings attached? We know the answer in California and New Mexico.

If there is any way to save our nation it must include breaking the back of big education.

This move by DeSantis gives hope.
