For more than four decades, screen mavens have been eagerly awaiting the time when Steven Spielberg would bite the bullet and make a full-blown movie musical. Now he’s done it. It comes out at Christmastime.
“West Side Story”? The 1957 Broadway show brilliantly adapted “Romeo and Juliet” by combining Shakespeare’s tragedy of teenage romance through two hot-button issues: juvenile delinquency and ethnic strife.
So why will he get canceled? Simple. Lin-Manuel Miranda and his co-author Quiara Alegria Hudes have just been eaten alive on social media and in the pages of The New Yorker and the Washington Post for supposedly mishandling the “representation” of Hispanics in the recently released “In the Heights.”
. Let’s talk turkey here. Spielberg is a Jew. His screenwriter, Tony Kushner, is a Jew. Kushner adapted a screenplay by Ernest Lehman, who was a Jew. The four authors of the Broadway show — Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Laurents and Jerome Robbins — were Jews.

The best version of the music of West Side Story is the album by the Oscar Peterson Trio.

The rage mob does NOT use guilty-until-proven-innocent logic. They simply assign guilt. There is no logic at all in regard to figuring out if they are correct. Proof of innocence just makes whoever presented the proof guilty as well--because they are trying to support the person they decided was guilty. The only "logic" they apply is in regard to what side they better put themselves on not to be a target themselves while earning favor with the mob in their zeal to persecute the targets.

#3, Re “they had something else in common”. Not just being Jewish, but they had TALENT, something so sadly lacking in many of today’s movie producers/writers/stars and media asskissers.
Don’t know much about Lin-Miranda and his cohorts but from what I’ve read, he/they have that same degree of talent that the “Four Jews” had with the original “West Side Story”. I mean that as a sincere compliment.
Forget what the Marxist/insane Wash. Post writes. That paper is worse than used toilet paper. The New Yorker used to be a good read and had the best, thinking person’s cartoons in the business. Sad to see that they have let themselves degenerate to the level of used toilet paper, anti-Semitism and perhaps anti-creative Hispanics in the entertainment industry. They are the new Red Chinese “Red Guards” (”Hung Wei Pings”) of the culture world and just as destructive.
What America needs is a “Cultural Revolution” of our own, but one that “PRESERVES” the “FOUR OLDS”, not destroys them.
Yes, they were all extremely talented.
West Side Story is one of America’s great treasures. I hope Spielberg’s version treats it as such.
Could be wrong, but I don’t think he was a Levine in the sense that he raped young boys. I think it was more the 16/17-ish and older that he went after. Still not good given his position of power, but it was somewhat in line with the way people viewed male teenagers in that era (as young men). Of course, people were more responsible for themselves earlier back then too.
