King told local ABC affiliate KATV news that the truck wouldn't properly shift into park, so Brittain went to the back of the truck with a jug of antifreeze to prop behind a truck's tire so that it wouldn't roll backward and strike Davis' vehicle. That's when Davis fired at Brittain, and according to King, Davis didn't tell him to stop or get on the ground. He just shot him.

utter bs or a very stupid person.
Yeah, I know. I could get kicked off of FR for lack of kneejerk reactions.
Those are not mutually exclusive possibilities.

The police have a very difficult and dangerous job. And the streets are rougher than when I was a kid. I get all that.
But when I was a kid, cops were “peace officers”. And they all dressed like Officer Reed on “Adam-12”.
But now cops are “law enforcement officers”. No more “Officer Friendly” when interacting with the public. And they carry all sorts of tactical gear. Some of them even wear camo pants. Camo pants? I just don’t understand that at all.
So, yeah. Too many cops see themselves as soldiers in an un-pacified area. Maybe that’s entirely necessary. But maybe it’s not.

Agreed. I read the story and I have an idea there is a lot more to this story.
Apparently the driver who was killed was picking up his truck from a body shop at 3 a.m. in the morning. That in itself is suspicious and probably why he was stopped. Second the Police seem eager to have the body cam video released which tells me they feel it will help them.

Maybe the officer did yell “FREEZE” and considered it resisting a lawful order when the kid went for a jug of anti-”FREEZE”.
OK, a touch of humor, but I will be curious what else comes out here. Can it be as bad of a shoot as it sounds?

I’ve looked into hundreds of these over the years. Some people needed killing. Others were involved in lawbreaking, maybe didn’t need to be shot in the circumstance, but were.
For the most part, I’m not so much worried about those, unless particularly egregious, for example the killing of Walter Scott. There may be a few others that are highly questionable.
However, the catagory I focus on, and am concerned about is: (1) Innocent citizens, (2) acting in a lawful manner, (3) behaving rationally for them under the circumstances- but still shot by police.
Someone reaching for a cellphone, police mistaken identity, a SWAT wrong house raid (because often in those cases the police haven’t really notified the people inside that’s it’s the police), an innocent citizen making a “furtive move” or “disobeying police (often contradictory) commands” being blown away I have a problem with.
This case falls into that catagory.
I’ve noted hundreds of those over the years.

It turned around when the teaching focused on hyper office safety, from public safety.
There’s a lot of truth to that. I had a problem child Marine during my last tour in Iraq. The kid had a temper problem and an addiction to exerting authority problem and he was the root-cause on a number of issues with the locals his CO eventually had to remedy, usually with cash payments because that’s how it was done.
He was administratively separated (but should have been court-martialed) shortly after the and of that tour. I found out a couple years ago that he’s been working as a deputy sheriff. I can’t imagine that imbecile with a gun and a badge. I have no idea how he passed a background check.

Kid: "Oh, it's the cops. We're on a hill, and I don't think the parking brake will hold, I am going to chock the rear wheels so we don't roll into the guy."
For a 17 year-old, that might be a reasonable train of thought. Have you ever done any kind of project with a 17 year old?
For me - Thank God I wasn't killed for all the stupid things I did when I was 17. (and 18, and 19... through about 25.)
Lower the entry standards. Prevent high quality people from joining because of the color of their skin. Have segments of the public, elected officials, the media and such constantly attack them to the point of getting twitchy on a daily basis. Have the police leadership sign on to any wacky leftwing idea that comes along. No wonder things go wrong.

In my neck of the woods, deputy sheriff jobs are VERY political. Qualifications definitely take a back seat to who you know. That, of course, doesn’t mean that all deputy sheriffs are unqualified.
But it does mean that the deputy hiring process is - shall we say - rather relaxed.
Was it ‘assault’ anti-freeze in a all black bottle?
