Missing pet dog returns home in the middle of the night and presses family's doorbell-The 18-month-old dog had apparently been spooked by fireworks

It turns out, dogs know how doorbells work.

A couple in South Carolina worried about their lost dog were surprised when their doorbell rang in the middle of the night. They were even more shocked when it turned out that their beloved pet had not only returned home but had also figured out how to use the electronic device.

Mary Lynn and her husband, Ryan, say that their dog Rajah got spooked by fireworks and escaped from their backyard in Greenville, Southwest News Service (SWNS) reports. For seven hours, the worried couple searched for the dog but could not find her.

Then, around 3 in the morning, Rajah walked up to the house’s front porch and rang the doorbell with her nose.

Cats, too. We have lever handles on the doors in our house. One of our cats quickly learned how to jump up and press the lever to open the door. We can’t keep him out of any room in the house! The other cat never figured it out, eve watching her little buddy do it.

The noise of him jumping up and working a door lever somewhere can scare the bejeebers out of you in a quiet house.

My old friend had a golden retriever who would turn door knobs and get in the house. We watched her do it several times.

LOL

Too true.

Here’s a story that embarrasses me to tell.

Back in the 80s I had my own “Dobe rescue” thing going, long before others did that.

I was living in a Craftsman style rental house with the obligatory “shotgun hallway”.

The 3 Dobes were out in the hallway sleeping and I was in the bedroom.

In the middle of the night, the doorknob starts rattling stealthily, as though someone out there is testing it, in preparation for breaking into the bedroom.

So, in the total darkness, I thought I’d be clever and beat them to the punch.
I silently got out of bed, slithered over to the heavy oak door, grabbed the knob and FLUNG it open.

Unfortunately, I neglected to get out of the way of said heavy oak door and flung the leading edge of it right into my left brow bone.

The blood instantly poured, I howled in agony, which woke up my sleeping husband, sending him into a blind panic.

And through the screams, the blood and his freaking out, I looked down to see Arthur the Doberman, who was just standing there, looking like he thought we were all insane.

He’d figured out doorknobs.

Still have a wicked scar on my brow bone.

My 14 year old dog is also terrified of fireworks, but the meds I got from my vet REALLY help (as does his decreasing ability to hear).

What are the meds, if I may ask?

Ouch! Arthur the Doberman, who was just standing there, looking like he thought we were all insane....

followed by the head cock and the expression, "Whut? You didn't know I could do that?"

Hate when that happens...

I had a cat who hated closed doors. He’d get them open in two seconds flat. Even bathroom doors which upset guests for some reason.

He just wagged his little nub.

For all I know, this was like a comedy routine for dogs.

:D

Bubby, my beloved [RIP] tried to master door knobs but due to the really deep doorway [log house] he could never get his jaws around it just right...so he crushed into a deformed, tooth mark pocked brass blob.

I will never change that door knob.

:)

I think cats watch us also...we have lever handles on doors...and have to lock our bedroom door to keep cat out.

I forgot to mention that Merlin and Angus were still curled up on their bed, looking upon the gory scene in wide eyed horror.

I’m pretty sure that they thought Arthur had murdered me.

The first question might be why are they trying to avoid detection.

Secondly if their fireworks are illegal, why?

Thirdly if illegal where are they getting them?

Who is the supplier?

It’s the fourth for crying out loud. You can’t handle a weeks celebration of the fourth?

We seem to have the same situation where I live to some degree.

Fireworks are legal including with reservation, the good stuff. No cherry bombs, and the like which is determined by the human protection society to be explosive devices. Can’t have those.

but back to reality...

The city I don’t live in bans fireworks, at least the good stuff, so where does everyone go who has the good stuff which isn’t illegal? They go where I live maybe five miles out in the county. For about three days each Independence day it is the finest fireworks display you will ever see. The complaints are endless, whining included. Fortunately the fireworks lobby in the Capitol is pretty strong so it would be crazy for Legislators to go after the fourth of July displays, but never think it can’t happen with enough complaining.

So, needing to know more why it appears Sal A Mander has a thing for fireworks?

“They watch us turn a door knob to open a door,”

Funny you should say that. My dog watches me every time I open a door. I have caught her several times studying the door knob. She is seriously trying to figure it out.

Apart from the effect on pets, there’s a thing called fire. Some of us live surrounded by 60 foot conifers and idiots with pyrotechnics and beer.

If only they knew how to ring doorbells

ALL fireworks except sparklers and “snakes” are illegal in my state.

Fools go across the very nearby state lines to PA and WV and buy huge explosive crap and drag it back home and set it off without safety measures or training, and drunk, to boot.

In huge dry July forests, no less.

There are a crapload of free fireworks displays around here that they can easily attend.

When *my* dogs injure themselves freaking out inside the house because the noise is deafening even in here, then yeah, I have a major problem with it.

But hey, it’s all about them.

From where the stupid kin set off their crap to here, it’s just a quarter mile ridge of dead, dry jack pines.
