In what is perhaps an ominous harbinger of the coming fire season, crews are battling multiple wildfires across California while much of the region remains mired in treacherous heat and bone-dry conditions.

The largest of the fires, the lightning-sparked Lava fire in Siskiyou County, forced the evacuation of at least 8,000 residents Monday afternoon as gusty red flag conditions fueled the searing flames.

By Tuesday morning, the fire had expanded nearly tenfold, to 13,300 acres, Shasta-Trinity National Forest officials said. By the evening, the fire was 19% contained and the National Weather Service had tweeted that smoke from the area could carry over to Medford, Ore.

First came the drought. Then there were fires. Next up: monsoons.

The National Weather Service is warning that a surge of monsoonal storms Tuesday and Wednesday could bring flash flooding and elevated fire threats.

I didn’t think there was much forest left to burn in kali after the fire seasons of the last few years.

Well, the good news is the mudslides have put out the fires.

I remember seeing that quip. Carson said that to Letterman via telephone on Letterman's show son after Carson retired. Letterman was in NY and Carson was in Malibu.

Thanks for that. I remember it now. I thought it was during a monolog. Damn, I miss Carson and those days.

Been trying to find a definition of the term “lava fire”. All I see are sites that refer to it, but never define it. What exactly is a lava fire? Is it a fire that includes lava flows?

That region is covered with ancient lava beds, and a lot of dense, dry scrub. And scores of marijuana operations hidden behind 10’ high green mesh fencing. Its gotta be a tinderbox this year.

There it is, dry shrub. Nowhere else do fires break out like in CA and everyone else has to pay for it.

Not sorry for any people but am sorry for the animals that perish during these. The people could have, should have, done some prevention. Where’s PETA when they’re needed?

I just hope the fires won’t burn the fiberglass wind power rotor vanes

Loss of renewable power during a heat wave would be tragic

Fires are named after something in the area where they started. There could have been a Lava Rd in the area or a Lava Canyon.
Yeah hubby is a retired watershed expert. His strike team was always the first one out on mutual aid calls across California.
