Neeva Inc., a new startup led by the former head of Google LLC’s multibillion-dollar ad business, launched a subscription-based search engine today that aims to compete with Google Search.
The startup is backed by more than $77 million in funding from investors that include Sequoia and Greylock.
Neeva provides a search engine that resembles Google Search in many ways, except it doesn’t display ads above users’ search results. According to the startup, taking ads out of results will facilitate a better user experience by reducing the amount of time that consumers have to scroll before finding the answer to their question.
“Neeva was built on the premise that search should focus on the consumer, and only the consumer, not advertisers,” said Neeva co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Sridhar Ramaswamy. “Search results should always prioritize finding the best answer to a consumer’s query — not on selling ads or tracking behavior online.”
Before launching Neeva, Ramaswamy spent more than a decade at Google, where he oversaw its core advertising business as vice president of ads and e-commerce. […]
Because Neeva doesn’t display ads and therefore can’t use them to generate revenue, the startup plans to make money by offering its search engine for a $4.95 monthly subscription. To persuade consumers to sign up, the startup is pitching not only an ad-free search experience but also a number of additional features that aren’t available in Google. …

Is it spyware, as Google is? And is it a propaganda engine rather than a search engine, i.e. showing you want it wants you to see, instead of showing you what you are looking for, as Google is? Does it censor content, as Google does?
Another fake search engine but you’re forced to pay for this one.
Sounds like a skin creme.
Will it help my skin?
What’s the SPF?
Good to see more competition but just because they don’t post ads doesn’t mean they don’t log and sell your information. I highly suggest using Brave, or TOR, with a good VPN that has 3rd party audits and no treaty with the USA for sharing logs. Some people have problems with TOR, and it has been compromised once that I’m aware of, but don’t be an easy target. Make hackers and gubmint evil-doers have it easy!
Let me rephrase that last sentence, DON’T LET HACKERS AND GUBMINT EVIL-DOERS make you an easy target. Be a hard target and make them work. There is no such thing as secure electronic comms. Everything can be cracked with enough money and time. But at least make them work for it. Typically they will move on to lower hanging fruit.
$4.95 monthly subscription for a search engine designed by ex-Google employees. Wow. People rich enough to pay that are smart enough to know that Google is not American, not Christian and not Ethical.
Paying for a search engine is like paying for a prostitute. Why should I pay for it, where if I just apply myself a little I could get it for free.
Google’s pretty good for the non-political stuff. Just remember to search in the native language with the correct special characters.
Certainly.
as pontificated by a snake oil salesman, many moons ago!
I am thinking...
Why can't Google remove their own ads - with a couple mouse clicks - and start charging an optional subscription fee, just like their new competitor?
Exactly. This venture is a non-starter. $60 year seems high for a single service, especially when there are no- cost alternatives. Consumers are getting subscription fatigue as well. For this business, the model is off, the market timing is bad, and the competition has established and free providers.
I cannot pronounce the name.
Duckduckgo is another silly name.
