Imagine purchasing a home and living in it and paying taxes on that home and property for decades. Then being told part of that property you paid taxes on is in violation and must be being taken away without compensation. Not only that, you’re responsible for footing the cost of removing the stuff you have on that land, like your fence or shed. Oh, and it has to be done in a few months time.

They built beyond their property line boundary. But I guess the article would sound less exciting if it said, "Residents told to remove structures from land which they don't own".

Stop. Making. Sense.

Bet the property tax won’t be reduced.

I'd like to see first if their property tax assessment ever included the land that didn't belong to them and that they encroached on. I'm betting it didn't.

I’ve been associated with this business for 50 year. There must be more to it.

We had that happen here. There was a subdivision with a park in the middle which was part of the subdivision but belonged to the Town. It was very well defined so everyone knew where the property line ended.

Unfortunately, an aerial map found a dozen sheds, swing sets, compost bins....

Did the owners know they were encroaching....you bet. They all got a notice and removed their "who would care" items.

Perhaps there is, I can’t really say. Just going by what he told me.

We had something similar here. They were given an easement which ends if the fence should be removed...but not ownership.

He didn’t have any fence around his property. At least not that I remember. It’s been quite a while ago now, so I can’t really state with confidence that he did or didn’t have the fence. 8>)
