Well that’s a first! I never knew a soldier who thought the mess hall food was good!
I never got any plum pudding or gingerbread in the mess hall.
Major-General John A. Dix: July 1, 1861 (“General McClellan’s condition is very critical. He is surrounded by overwhelming numbers. He has been fighting five days.”)

Captain Charles Russell Lowell to Anna Jackson Lowell, July 1, 1861 (“Got my orders this morning all right — have taken the oath of allegiance, and signified my acceptance of the appointment, —so I am now fairly in the U. S. Army.”)

How demoralized !
“ Major-General John A. Dix: July 1, 1861
[FORT MONROE, VA., July 1, 1861.]
General McClellan’s condition is very critical. He is surrounded by overwhelming numbers. He has been fighting five days. I am sending him re-enforcements, but they are for the most part exhausted men. I hope for the best. I have private despatches from him. Yesterday he was attacked at all points, but he held the enemy in check. May God be with us!”
