The techniques of political warfare that Nazi Joseph Goebbels pioneered remain powerful and effective, especially when they go unrecognized and unchallenged.
Joseph Goebbels faced a significant challenge when he accepted a prominent party posting in Berlin in October of 1926. While the Nazi party had some strength in the south and north of Germany, it had virtually no support in the capital, where the Social Democrats and Communists effectively competed in elections but the public barely knew the National Socialists existed. Goebbels set out to change this by staging provocations against his political adversaries, marching his uniformed followers into their political strongholds, forcing a response, drawing their protest, and thereby winning free publicity. When the Nazis were portrayed as a growing menace in the opposition press, this only served to enhance the image of the movement Goebbels was working to build. To further publicize the movement he founded a weekly newspaper, Der Angriff (The Attack) and used it to promote the party's vision.
In no small part due to his aggressive tactics, the streets of Berlin became scenes of political violence. Communist and National Socialist activists frequently brawled, and these brawls occasionally resulted in fatalities. As the Berlin police sought to stem the violence, Goebbels denounced them as agents of "The System" that both he and his communist adversaries were seeking to destroy. Goebbels worked to discredit the police by portraying them as little more than tools of Jewish interests deployed to squelch the true German spirit while simultaneously portraying National Socialist thugs as persecuted victims of "The System" he accused the police of serving. The demonization of law enforcement was a key to weakening the hated Weimar Republic; it also legitimated the comprehensive political rejection that National Socialism represented.

For the record, the French didn’t leave the Rhineland until 30 June 1930. By the terms of the WW I treaty...they could have stayed on until 1934.

I have been saying for some time that George Floyd is the left’s Horst Wessel.
That is, he was a fully factionalized figure who was used by the radical leaders as an emotional symbol to whip up self-righteous fury among their followers. You need a figure like that to keep it going and keep people full of ruthless hatred for their imaginary enemy. Every radical totalitarian movement needs an imaginary martyr and an imaginary villain to keep it going.

While to the Nazi the communist and to the communist the Nazi, and to both the socialist, are potential recruits made of the right timber, they both know that there can be no compromise between them and those who really believe in individual freedom.

.....your observation is quite on the mark...there is a lot about Horst Wessel that is not correct or has been mythologized...yes, he was killed by Commnunist sympathizers but not for the reasons most folks think...his killing was a revenge killing...he was no martyr for the NAZI cause....this is an excerpt from another web site regading this thug....

Although the exact details of the argument are still debated, what is known is that: 1) she claimed Wessel refused to pay his rent — alternately, she may have tried to raise it and Wessel refused to pay the difference; 2) she claimed he threatened to beat her; 3) Wessel refused to pay rent for his girlfriend, a prostitute (according to some accounts, a former prostitute reformed by Wessel); since the landlady was herself subletting to Wessel, she feared she would lose the rights to her apartment because a prostitute was living there. Rather than approach the police, the landlady went to a local tavern frequented by Communists for help.

Yes, he was a marginal type, borderline criminal, who lived in a quasi-underworld of his time and place. It was basically a dispute between thugs. But Hitler and his gang, who were masters of propaganda, sure knew how to use it.
