That quarantine process is standard.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/red-amber-and-green-list-rules-for-entering-england?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=govuk-notifications&utm_source=dbdeb3c5-9823-45b6-80af-079e3a9fe203&utm_content=weekly

Being from the US, we are rated Amber.

The UK has a list of approved hotels near the airport for quarantine detention.

One of those hotels is a Marriott near LHR and it is my usual hotel when I stop there. I pay roughly 100 pounds per night, and that would be around 1,000 pounds for 10 days. . .except, the UK contracted that all quarantined people MUST pay the 1,750 pounds. I asked if I could get my usual discount and was told NO! I had to pay the full 1,750 pounds.

Sadly, most Brits are like global warming true believers, when it comes to COVID, they UK government has no interest is relaxing restrictions, after all, they know best how to take care of their subjects. The subjects need government help.

Good to see early rumbling in the streets over the UK government behaving like a dictatorship.

Subject vs citizen. . .makes all the difference.

Well...the Brits did well during the Boer wars and concentration camps.

What a travesty that was.

The CCP is firmly in control of a number of countries now.

Justin let them mass tens of thousands of People’s Liberation Army troops on our northern border.

Won’t be long now.

no sympathy - go to a high-risk red country against travel advice and get detained for mandatory quarantine at your own expense. Why is the guy bellyaching?

~~~~~~~~~
Because he doesn’t want to live under Chinese oppression? He hasn’t committed a crime and has not lost his right to talk to others but his ‘minder’ is threatening to report him? Traveling against ‘Travel Advice’ is not a felony.
I can see them charging over the usual, since a large part of the hotel rooms can’t be used for normal clientele and they’ll have to contract with hazmat to clean the rooms afterwards - maybe even toss mattresses and linens for those testing positive. And who wants to stay the night in a quarantine hotel? Now, if it was 4x the rate, there might be a gripe, but objectively it sounds fair.
He traveled to a red zone. Stupid is as stupid does. He wasn’t just picked up off the streets for interrogation. NO comparison to China.
let’s not forget, the first three flights to the US from Wuhan and the evacuees from the Princess cruise were treated exactly the same way - no visitors, no liberty, recreation and fresh air breaks, tested every day for two weeks (or more in a few cases).
Comparison to China is apt. They simply remove your rights and force you to be detained in a Covid hotel against your will, with guards on ever floor, lift and 20-30 guards in the lobby to make sure you don’t leave and oh, you have to pay for this ‘treatment.’
If that wasn’t bad enough, they just made up rules saying he can’t talk to others outside the fence. Yes, they are going to report him for speaking. Like China, they just make up rules and force you to submit. Wonder how long they’ll detain him for speaking?
China would have arrested anyone attempting to go to a red zone. Much less try to sneak back. And they would have disappeared them for months minimum.
The traveler of the story has not been disappeared. He knew the restrictions, he made his choice to travel, KNOWING that he would have to mandatory quarantine on return. He didn’t have to come back now did he? Nobody twisted his arm.
Even Harry had to quarantine when he returned to England for his granddad’s funeral, and he’s a royal.(or was)
As to talking to someone outside the gate - the delta variant is said to be more ‘sticky’, more contageous in outside environs than the original Wuhan version (R=2-3 vs R=6+), so if he was talking to someone outside the fence without keeping personal distance, he was potentially endangering the driver. I think delta is now 1 in 5 new English cases and responsible for breakthrough cases, so they’re paranoid of it.
But aside from the hysterics, it probably boils down to, if we let this guy have visitors across the fence, we have to let everyone, so we let noone.
Your concerns about social distancing in this context are ridiculous and reveal you did not watch the video.
This is transition from freedom to Chinese oppression and those new to it, in the video for example, know what it is as it begins to take shape.
They know how to phase in repression so for now, you’re essentially arrested when you RETURN and you’re to tell others what happened to deter them from travel. No rights, no ability to speak - these are training tools.
The guy was not bellyaching. The people outside the fence got his attention and asked him questions. Watch the video.
Would you consider it 'chinese oppression' if the quarantined hot zone traveler was returning from an Ebola, small pox or TB hotzone? Or have you been lulled into a false sense of security that covid is no biggie, nothing to see here? For thee not me?
When an entire population is locked down off and on for a year, when even children are sacrificing and doing everything right to control spread, why on God's Green Earth should a traveler to hotzones be able to go to and fro without restrictions? How does that make any sense? In any reality? Nobody in the US said boo when we mandatory quarantined the rescued from Wuhan. So what changed? The US made quarantine ‘voluntary’ for returning travelers, expecting people to adhere to it, which of course they didn't! Self-interest, selfishness and lackadaisical attitudes towards others has resulted in spread of virus from NY (and Mexico) to Calif and to the US holding the title of more admitted to deaths than any other country in the world. So, lesson learned by the rest of the world. Voluntary don't cut it when existential issues for nations are at the forefront.
Covid may not seem a big deal in a US, where we're more focused on arguing death numbers or potential vaccine side effects, than on the disabilities of the survivors and the astronomical costs of treatment and economic impact of a pandemic spreading through supply and labor chains. But it's a huge concern in the rest of the world, especially in nations with smaller populations and fewer resources. Nations that have a sovereign right to institute border controls on travelers. There are now 220 nations fighting to remain viable, fighting to overcome the enormous costs of medical treatment in nations ill-suited to afford it and fighting the collapse of their economies, in sum, fighting for their lives, literally. If you think travel restrictions and border control is 'chinese oppression' maybe it might be time to increase your world-view and think again.
What exactly is “stickiness? Sticks to surfaces? Sticks in lungs?
Wondering why more contagious outside...And how is it more contagious...
