River, the dog which served as both model and inspiration for Fallout 4's Dogmeat, has died. Developer Joel Burgess, who was River's owner, announced the death on Twitter...
In that Twitter thread, Burgess goes deep into detail about how River influenced his desire to have a dog companion in Fallout 4 be more than a weapon, but a true friend to the player. Bringing the personality of a loving, protective, outgoing dog to Fallout 4 was one of Burgess' design goals for the character, and so River's looks, movements, but most importantly personality were reflected in the in-game character. Dogmeat's propensity to bring you large objects, even ones you didn't want, was based on River.
It's never easy to lose a friend, especially when that friend is a constant companion like a dog. Our hearts go out to Joel Burgess, and everyone who knew River. Raise a glass to River's memory today. As Dogmeat, at least, she can keep bringing people joy (and large sticks) for years to come.

Those look like English words, but the arrangement is just weird.
A beautiful girl!
I wonder how she died and how old she lived to be.
I concur and wonder if I should understand. (I don’t)
German Shepherd. Gorgeous and great, as usual.
First, I need to know what Fallout 4 is.
From what I see here, w/o any Googling, Fallout 4 must be an online Game. River, the dearly departed cannine was real.
Happy Trails, River, until I toggle again!
DOGS — one of God’s greatest gifts to us
The great thing about Dogmeat (unlike the other potential sidekicks) is that it doesn’t stop interrupt your quests in order to have awkward conversations.
But I always use a mod to stop his constant barking/scratching/whimpering sounds.
Beautiful breed of dog, and smart as a whip too!
Fallout 4 was an excellent single-player game.
Lassie was very ‘talkative’, and did mucho whining.
Our daughter has a toy poodle (breed). They say small dogs bark a lot but you don’t know how much until you get one.
Most Toy type breeds I’ve met are brimming full of energy.
Many people will treat them like the itty bitty toys and stuffed animals they resemble, not really being concerned with (or aware of the need for) exercising the dog.
So, you get this Engergizing Bunny of a dog, who is healthy, strong and just crackling with nervous energy. I haven’t the patience for such a dog at this stage in my life.
As Carly Simon sang: “I Haven’t Got Time For The Pain!”
Yep, dog is an ally, literally man’s best friend.
I remember playing Fallout 4 heavily modded and Dogmeat had on his Minuteman armor with the logo.
If I had designed the game, I would have given Dogmeat the ability to sniff out people to see if they were ‘synth’ or not. That would have been pretty cool.
