20 years ago, here in FL, on a fishing boat with a buddy, coming back from the intercoastal. Dusk. River maybe 70 feet wide. We idle past a park, other side of the small river, inhabited by ferals having a party.
The water around us started splashing, as objects thrown by the ferals homed in on us. Large rocks, size of your fist. Some larger. Picked up from the crumbled seawall boundary of the park and launched at us.
I moved to hammer the throttle, but my buddy already had the flare gun out. Shot a flare at them, skipped it off the water (on purpose), skimmed at them head high. They hit the deck, and ran screaming like banshees.
I laughed for 10 minutes.
For those who’ve lost gun rights I guess
A Ruger 44 black powder or an antique weapon are better choices

The effectiveness of the flare gun is not going to be its ability to injure but to startle and distract.

I was expecting to see him shoot an attacker with the flare gun.

There have been several cases where they found abandoned pirated boats with spent flare gun shell casings on them. It would be nice to know how the flare gun worked out as a weapon, but no one can find the boat owners to ask them.

up close and personal... the best is a short barrelled shotgun. Don’t load it with birdshot, with one exception... loads for hunting geese 3mag #2 will DEFINITELY do the job. Pistol “shmistol”! I carried pistols(HANDGUNS) when I had a badge. BUT it was NEVER ANYTHING MORE THAN A “... OH CRAP...” tool. If I actually thought there was going to be gun-play... I took the shotgun. It’s a little like taking artillery to a knife fight.
