Interesting though not entirely surprising.

I wonder though, how do those rounds from that cheap little pistol compare to a full power round like a metal military flare pistol would use?

I get that the point of this video is “Dont think that THIS little toy can be used for defense.”

Ill tell you why Im questioning the difference in potential. When I lived in Germany 30some years ago, I knew a woman that claimed to have been shot with one. She didnt offer much in the way of details about the gun or anything though we could assume it likely would have been a military version though knowing her and the crowd she ran with it could have been some old surplus thing with with God knows what kind of homebrewed round too if her story was true.

Anyway, she had a rather unusual set of scars. Off to the right side of her abdomen and back were scars that appeared to have burn scars around them.

It seemed a convincing story at the time though I have to admit that I had other things on my mind.

My first thought was of using flares in naval warfare.
If the park had been full of pine needles and autumn leaves!

When I don’t want to carry my pistol, I always take my slapjack and blowtorch cigar lighter.

Ruger Old Army revolvers are .45 Caliber, and unfortunately no longer in production.

I have a Sedgely MkV 10 gauge Nady marked flare pistol. Haven’t fired it in years. I’ve got 23 brass cased flares for it, red, green, and white. Found it decades ago in an old barn. My Dad located a case of mixed shells for it. We used to shoot it on the 4th of July. I had a gunsmith look at it once to see if you could fire a 10 ga. shotshell in it. He said the barrel and action were strong enough but the chamber was too short. Even with flares it kicks like a mule. It will put a 10 ga. flare up to 400 foot or so. It has a 7 inch barrel. I’m damn sure it would kill you if you were within 50 foot or so.

They do make..ahem...inserts that fit Flare guns that allow shotshell use. they also make sub caliber inserts that allow pistol cartridge use. If nothing else a bit of time and elbow grease on a lathe will make a shot shell insert. Mind you this would be a short barrel shotgun as far as the ATF is concerned.

Thank you! Alternatively, you can make your own adapters for various pistol calibers, using flanged &/or tubular bronze bearings, inexpensive pistol barrels, 12-gauge pistol caliber adapters, etc. The result is a single-shot handgun, the creation of which may or may not be legal in all jurisdictions, for all people, etc., and the operation of which would include indeterminate risk factors. But (as always ;^) "inquiring minds" etc., etc., etc...

Most of us don’t have tooling lathes so we buy these things on John Galt’s market.

One of the best rounds is the Personal Defense PDX round.

“….i would call that “Effective “.”

It was. Dude was an ex cop. We both were carrying. I really hesitated pulling it, as tthat meant shooting, and I would go to jail although it was obviously self defense.

He shot the flare, fast, and ended it. Just...perfect!

There are plenty of 21st century "Liberator"-type handguns (and long guns, as well) hiding in the pages of an average industrial supply catalog - no complicated tooling necessarily required...

;^)

I wouldn’t mind a long gun insert.

Indeed

The original versions were called 44 ...they started calling in 45 later
though they did shoot a 45 ball

Btw all .44 black powder pistols even if called 44 shoot 451 or 454 so technically I guess they are 45

Strange no?

Another fun fact is you could buy a cylinder clip that held the cartridges and convert the old army into a smokeless 45 long colt shooter

I converted two that way.....no paperwork or Brady

It’s a great pistol

Expensive

I want the Ruger 5.7
