No, I won't be posting a synopsis for those who claim to refuse to visit YouTube.

Unrelated vid that showed up in suggested vids, also worth watching imho.

Why not? You know the story. Summarize it. Be a FRiend to busy FReepers - free Americans who work hard for a living and have little time but not much, to plow through FR.

I’ve wasted nearly as much time on this reply as you have on yours. In the interval you’d have seen the video yourself by now.

It makes sense from an economic standpoint, both for Turkey and for Russia, and most importantly, helps ErdoWan politically.

It will make Erdoo and his family very very wealthy.

Putin has a hand to play too. Not sure how Putin and Erdoo will work out in the long term. But on the other hand, Putin embraces some really bad “partners” (i.e. Iran etc.)

Yeah but multiply that times the number of others who might want to know. Wonder why you post stuff if you don’t take the next step to just summarize.

Turkey is considering building a canal west of Istanbul so they can charge for its use and allow foreign (NATO) warships passage into the Black Sea. Under the Montreux Convention the Turks have to allow free civilian ship passage through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits and military ships of countries not on the Black See are restricted. Russia argues that a canal bypassing the Bosporus would also be covered by the Montreux Convention.

I don’t see how building the canal benefits anyone. USA uses the strait, as the only ships that are restricted are non-russian military ships with cannons over a certain size. We take missile carrying ships and it is OK. Other countries haven’t been that bold. Russia is specifically exempt already.

As far as non military ships, if they build the canal and paying, will allow ships to transit faster, but the more traffic in the canal the more it relieves traffic in the strait, thereby reducing the need to pay to use the canal. The strait is free so plenty will wait through the delay instead of paying to use the canal.

The canal will be self defeating.

Because it is what the Christians should have done to keep out the Muslim barbarians?

This will make it hard for any rebellion to move tanks and troops into the city.

USN ships would be sitting ducks in range of Russian land-based air power. Out sending stuff into the Black Sea would be suicidal in a shooting war.
