Four people died and one person was in critical condition after a hot air balloon they were riding in hit power lines in New Mexico’s largest city, police said Saturday.

The crash happened around 7 a.m. on Albuquerque’s west side, police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said. No identities have been released but fire officials said two males, including the pilot, and two females died.

The multi-colored balloon skirted the top of the power lines, sending at least one dangling and knocking out power to more than 13,000 homes, Gallegos said.

I wonder if that includes (and it should) the 16 people that were killed in Lockhart Tx in 2016. That would be 21, including todays death toll (5 now).

Prayers to their loved ones and families. RIP.

And some people want to go all the way up to the atmosphere in a balloon.

You do not have to touch a power line to strike an arc. It depends on the voltage, but at 255 kv the distance is approximately 9 feet.

RIP.

During my electric utility experience I saw the light once, and talked with some crew who did shortly before I came upon them. Thanks to really fast protective circuitry, none of us was hurt. But a couple of the guys nearly set a new land speed record to get away from the 300 MW arc! It set green grass on fire at 120 feet distance!

Good idea. A few years back, a similar incident in Texas(?) resulted in the deaths of a half-dozen(?) and the operator of the balloon was found to be impaired from an illegal substance in their system.
