Fire and smoke coming from deep inside the concrete and metal remains of a collapsed 12-story condominium tower near Miami hampered rescue efforts Saturday as emergency workers raced to recover any survivors beneath the mountain of rubble.
A firehose blasted one of the lower floors on the north side of the tower as white smoke or steam streamed out, and a bitter, sulfur-like smell hung in the air.
A crane removed pieces of debris from the more than 30-foot pile, and scores of rescuers used big machines, small buckets, drones, microphones and their own hands to pick through the rubble.
Federal Emergency Management Agency officials have joined local and state authorities at the site, DeSantis said. He added that a nearby “sister building” of the collapsed tower is also being looked at because it was built at the same time and with the same designer.
Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said he was working on a plan to temporarily relocate residents of the Champlain Towers North, which was constructed the same year and sits about 100 yards away from the collapsed building, and that FEMA has agreed to pay for lodging.
Burkett added that he was also trying to arrange an emergency inspection and until that happens, he can’t tell residents whether they’re safe in their homes.

If the building “pancaked”, as it is reported, the number of bodies found would be about as many as those found in the rubble left from the Twin Towers collapse of 9/11.
In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s I worked in non-destructive testing in Houston, mainly x-raying welds. Every so often we would be asked to x-ray concrete pillars and beams that were cracked and dropping chunks off. It turned out that contractors were cutting corners by using beach sand to mix concrete. After a while the salt and moisture would corrode the rebar making it swell and bust the concrete. By the time it was found those contractors had shut down and walked away to count their money.
That is going to kill any who may have survived the initial collapse.
Hopefully smoke inhalation got them before the flames did.

Been watching it since it happened. I was up at 2am that morning. You are correct. From every vantage point no one but no one was addressing the heap of a two building 12 stories high. There IS NO UNDERGROUND GARAGE that I can see. Found this treasure. Parking garage is the first floor. Not underground. I am sick to my stomach watching and waiting for 60 hours for FR to be allowed to actually do SAR.all activity is underground tunnels they day. Okay. Right. On the beach in florida.

I worked building pools in Florida in the early 70s. At that time the inspectors(at least in Volusia County where we worked) were careful to see that we properly prepared the ground and that our decks met precise grades for runoff.
If the contractors that built this place couldn't even grade a pool deck.....that's not reassuring.
