Let’s say we have a Time Machine that can go only back to the 1930s and 1940s. Would you take it?

My parents are both passed. They were born in the 1920’s, Dad served in WW2 and Mom worked at Bell Telephone. She also had 13 kids and became an RN, but that is another story. Both would often tell me of the extremely tough times during the Great Depression. Mom said she remembers as a little girl with nothing to eat, she would sometimes chew the edge of a pencil just to satisfy the need to chew. Dad also experienced the lack of food and till his last day, never let any food go to waste. Found out after his passing from his friend at Dad’s funeral, he told me of the horrific days in Guadalcanal. My dad lost his buddy right before his own eyes, from a grenade blast. My Dad when asked, never ever shared his experience, only saying you don’t need to know.

In America, (not Europe) with all the terrible circumstances and events in the 1930’s and 1940s, they still had something that we no longer have. They had America. They had true family values. There was no social justice hijacking of businesses or the individual. There was no platform to allow or perpetuate the psychosis of one gender to say they are the opposite gender. There was no “Defund the Police”. There was no demonization of our Flag. There was no cancel culture. There was no one party rule. There was no enforcement of a fake vaccine that causes countless deaths and disabilities.

So my question to you, if you could go back to the 1930s or 1940s in exchange with our current times, would you?

God, no. But I’d take a one-way trip back to 1982 if I could be a teenager again.

I want to go back to my 16 year old self in 1977 and take up the offer of my 17 year old neighbor Melinda for sex. She pestered me for a while. I turned her down- too scared and strict Catholic upbringing. Man was I a fool looking back.

Still kicking myself in the butt. She was a cutie.

Be just in time for Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Omaha Beach, Hurtgen Forest, Aachen, Iwo Jima and Okinawa ...?

My first thought too. Relive the Depression, gigantic Dust Bowl storms, Jim Crow laws, AND WWII? No effin' way.

Medically I’d have died fairly early...either thyroid disease or from my congenital heart defect

Other than that I’m 80% there

I would point out that this America of the 1930’s and 40’s which some appear to be nostalgic for was presided over by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the man who introduced many policies and programs regarded as ‘socialist’ in nature.
So if that’s anyone’s cup of tea...

No, I don’t think so. I got dealt one of the best hands anyone in human history ever has been. I’m going to play it until the last card is down.

If I got to go back with everything I know, yes.

I started out my post denying there is institutional racism in the US right now.

They are trying. The court is slapping down Biden efforts. It is morally ok now to discriminate against whites and sometimes Asians. In the eyes of our media and much of our government.

As for marriage it’s not a sin so I’d not forbid it. If you see practical difficulties well so be it. Moses married an Ethiopian.

As much as you might admire The Greatest Generation, you’re going to be an odd duck in so many ways, you’d have a very hard time.

Take me back to the Reagan Era of the ‘80’s.

But only if I turn into my younger self on the trip.

And only if I can see the same people.

On the way back, we can stop in the 40’s so I can see my grandparents.

“Moses married an Ethiopian.”

This does not even belong in the same universe of comparison to today’s disastrous bipeds. :-)

Back then though American citizens of perfectly good character were being frequently and consistently treated as second class or worse. It was a real thing. Can’t use a swimming pool? Can’t buy a house over there? Can’t get hired here? Can’t go to college there? Not allowed to shop here? Literally at the back of a bus? Not cool. Not cool at all.

Of course not all Americans were ok with it. But it was the basic law. Imagine broken down by the side of the road and a hotel would literally not rent you a room to stay the night.

So that’s another reason things weren’t idyllic. Spousal abuse way more tolerated. Child abuse, too. Try being a kid and telling on someone molesting you. It just was barely done.

I was born in 1935 and lived trough those times you mentioned.

To me it is a waste of time to try and tell young people how things were in those days.

To me it was winning WW11 that changed America for the better , and it was a lot different Country after that war.- Tom

Probably not. We are individuals. Cultures do have traits. But our character is not locked down by our genetics.

"He said he hoped so. If you weren’t adverse to working, there was money to be made for sure."

The problem is that people have changed since the Great Depression, so those that worked today during a depression, would be seriously preyed upon by those that won't. Crime is rampant now. It would be even worse during a depression today. There would probably be looting, and destruction on a very large scale to the point where stores wouldn't be able to remain open.
