My parents are both passed. They were born in the 1920’s, Dad served in WW2 and Mom worked at Bell Telephone. She also had 13 kids and became an RN, but that is another story. Both would often tell me of the extremely tough times during the Great Depression. Mom said she remembers as a little girl with nothing to eat, she would sometimes chew the edge of a pencil just to satisfy the need to chew. Dad also experienced the lack of food and till his last day, never let any food go to waste. Found out after his passing from his friend at Dad’s funeral, he told me of the horrific days in Guadalcanal. My dad lost his buddy right before his own eyes, from a grenade blast. My Dad when asked, never ever shared his experience, only saying you don’t need to know.
In America, (not Europe) with all the terrible circumstances and events in the 1930’s and 1940s, they still had something that we no longer have. They had America. They had true family values. There was no social justice hijacking of businesses or the individual. There was no platform to allow or perpetuate the psychosis of one gender to say they are the opposite gender. There was no “Defund the Police”. There was no demonization of our Flag. There was no cancel culture. There was no one party rule. There was no enforcement of a fake vaccine that causes countless deaths and disabilities.
So my question to you, if you could go back to the 1930s or 1940s in exchange with our current times, would you?
I rather like living in a world where the average life expectancy is 80, so no. Humans are full of sin and evil no matter what time period you’re looking at; might as well choose the one with better medicine.
Amen to that!
Interesting question with an interesting timeline.
One could argue, that during that time frame, one could find themselves in some of the worst situations of all time. WWII alone accounts for many of my top 10 worst places to be in history. Stalingrad, New Guinea or honestly anywhere in the pacific theater, Normandy…..
I’ll take the early 80s!
I’ll take a time machine that takes me back to 1960.
I would. The pictures I see of women back then were beautiful. They really knew how to dress feminine. I liked the commercial planes of the 40s too like the Connie and dc-6.
Maybe. Can we get enough of us to go to get rid of FDR?
Here is the ethical question. Is it just you and a sim-city with virtual characters? Or is it this world populated with the same folks from back then, brought back to life to re-experience the death camps, the Ukraine famine, the rape of Nanking, and the Katyn Forest massacre, just so YOU can experience 1930s and 1940s New York City? That would be a lot of folks dragged out of Heaven just to have deju-vu all over again for your own project. Not sure they would all appreciate it. And THAT just one of the problems with the concept of time travel.
Possible alternate history: You kill baby Hitler. Now you are hunted all your life as a baby killer. Later on Ernst Rohm’s power grows unchecked. Maybe Reinhard Heydrich becomes president and chooses not to attack Russia (at least not yet)and lets Rommel and Pauling secure Europe and the gulf states. Tweaking history can have unexpected results.
Film was scarce back then. It cost a bunch of cash to turn it into a photograph. Would you waste film on ugly back then. Point being. Darn sure that they was some ugly folk and it shouldn’t be #1 on reason for time travel.
Agree with your 1955. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere around world wars.
#63 In 90 years we would be ruled over by insect overlords
The 1930’s had no a/c so no way!

Considering I was born in 1970, the 30s and 40s would’ve been way before my time. The main benefit is I would’ve been able to meet the 3 grandparents who passed away before I was born.
I’d take 1980 though. If I knew what I know now, it would really be great. The 80s under Ronald Reagan and before political correctness were a great time. We had actual rock music on the radio. The Dukes of Hazard was the #1 TV show for several years with the glorious Confederate Battle Flag on the roof and the horn that loudly blared Dixie. Did I mention there was no political correctness? That means we had great comedy like Rodney Dangerfield, Sam Kinison, etc. The economy was booming after 1982 when Volker and Reagan broke the back of inflation. Also, both of my parents were still alive.
Thank you for your kind words.
No. This is my world. Music. Internet. Movies. Books. Conventions. There’s no place for me in the 30s or 40s.
“As for marriage it’s not a sin so I’d not forbid it. If you see practical difficulties well so be it. Moses married an Ethiopian.”
I’m not talking about individuals who, very selectively and carefully, choose who to marry.
What I’m talking about is two RANDOM GROUPS of people, in this case whites and blacks, peacefully coexisting in the same society.
It is my firm conviction (and simple logical extrapolation) that two groups of people with significantly different AVERAGE IQ will never be able to peacefully coexist in the same country.
It’s a sad reality, but a reality nonetheless. Look anywhere in the world and you will see it. The sooner we accept it and come to terms with it the better for everyone.
If you want to know how I came to that conclusion, let me know.

I’d go back to the mid 90’s and buy as much Amazon stock as I could before it took off.
My sweet spot is 1955-1972.
If it was post war 1946 or after I’d be fine with that as a starting point.
One other thing besides lack of A/C and modern medicine is the mixed blessing/curse of clothing. Men and women were expected to groom and dress in much nicer clothing than now. Suits, ties, dress slacks and shoes. Even hats. I find most of that clothing stifling now when mostly as a retired person I wear shorts and tee-shirts 90% of the time - and no one thinks much about it.
I can’t imagine either of my grandfathers as adults in shorts nor my father for that matter. Though he did spend a lot of time lounging around in his boxers, but just inside the home of course.
“Medically I’d have died fairly early...either thyroid disease or from my congenital heart defect”
In those decades...I’d have made it to at least 10 before the lights went out. It would have been a good run.
