A resident missing in the Surfside apartment collapse told her son the building was making loud “creaking noises” a day earlier, he said.
“She just told me she had woken up around 3, 4 in the morning and had heard like some creaking noises,” her son, Pablo Rodriguez, told CNN on Thursday after part of the 12-story building tumbled to the ground. “They were loud enough to wake her.”
“It was like a comment that she made offhand, like that’s why she woke up and she wasn’t able to go back to sleep afterwards,” he added. “Now, in hindsight, you always wonder.”
Both his mother and grandmother are missing.

No kidding. Every event is part of a conspiracy and tied to every other event. I’d hate to live like that.
Reportedly, this structure was built 40 or so years ago. This was during a building boom, that may well have allowed substandard structures to be built, too close to the shore and upon unstable sand. If this is the case, how many other buildings of any size where similarly built, and what will be done about them now.
This has the potential to create a controversy similar to the Seoul Shopping Mall disaster, the Sampoong Department Store collapse of 1995. Bad construction, building inspectors either negligent or compromised, and a complacent public led to more than 500 people dying in that terrible event. DeSantis seems to be getting out ahead of this, and I would guess at the least he will commission a commission to investigate this disaster. What else?
But since it’s not being offered to prove the truth of the matter asserted it’s not hearsay in the first place.
Considering many older people have hearing loss the noise must have been pretty loud.
Now wait a minute. The matter asserted is that the building was creaking loud enough to wake the declarant the night before.
Maybe it is covering for the Durham report. /s
One would have thought car alarms and house alarms would have gone off. Most people, if awoken by cracking and dogs barking would at least be headed out the door.
No, the matter asserted is that a communication to that effect was made.
