A resident missing in the Surfside apartment collapse told her son the building was making loud “creaking noises” a day earlier, he said.
“She just told me she had woken up around 3, 4 in the morning and had heard like some creaking noises,” her son, Pablo Rodriguez, told CNN on Thursday after part of the 12-story building tumbled to the ground. “They were loud enough to wake her.”
“It was like a comment that she made offhand, like that’s why she woke up and she wasn’t able to go back to sleep afterwards,” he added. “Now, in hindsight, you always wonder.”
Both his mother and grandmother are missing.

The residents probably couldn’t figure out why their animals were freaking out...
Hearsay? Good Lord! She was speaking to her son. That’s rather reliable “hearsay” don’t you think?
It is possible these noises had been going on for a while. Here and there. But once the structure decided it had enough the creaking must have gotten loud enough 24 hours or so beforehand to wake up this poor woman. We will probably never know how many others may have heard the same and dismissed it.
Animals can predict weather, so to speak, not so sure about this though. Not a natural event.
I’m wondering if more and more of these accounts....of family members/friends telling others about these strange noises.
Also....maybe some of them even recorded these sounds.
Or, perhaps their security systems (or the building’s) recorded the sounds/sights, taking place, beforehand.
Prayers, for all.
She is missing because....

My doggo freaked out last night when she heard a frog for the first time. I gar-un-tee she would be up and running around like crazy if she heard our house creak and crack like that.
Now, back to Maracopa
My border collie went nuts ten minutes before an earthquake hit; they know, they know.

Florida’s Atlantic Coast is a very corrosive environment. Post-tension cables give way all of the time if not properly done. I lived in a building where one let go and it burst through the concrete slab at points like a sine wave. And it was like a thunder-clap. I don’t know how many would have to let go to facilitate a collapse. I would not be surprised to learn this was the cause.
Some animals can hear much better than humans. Our dogs hear things that seem nearly impossible to hear.
The matter of hearsay doesn’t call into question her credibility. She is not the one reporting the conversation.
There are, of course, recognized exceptions to hearsay. Not aware that any apply here, I but might be missing one.
Is it possible that someone accidentally cut some post-tension cables and that’s what caused the collapse?
“That’s rather reliable “hearsay” don’t you think?”

While I’m not sure as to the technical aspect of it being ‘hearsay,’ I would not automatically assume he’s being honest.
There’s a lot of money now riding on potential lawsuits.
Then again, if my mom were living in a building and creaking sounds woke her up, I would be DIALING THE BUILDING MANAGER as soon as my mom were off the phone.
Damn. Just, damn.
Do tell....
Sounds like Vibrations and sounds were been present in the building leading up to the collapse.
Animals may have been aware of it.
But not necessarily any survival instinct.
I had a friend who barely escaped a burning “apartment” upstairs in an old 2 story home (downstairs was a store that had caught fire). He was leaving on the outdoor metal staircase with his cat and the cat freaked out from the fire (not on the stairs) and the smoke and went back into the house.
Definitely not a dying declaration. Declarant has to have genuine expectation of imminent death.
Not an excited utterance since it wasn’t made at the moment of experiencing the creaks.
Not a declaration of then-existing mental, emotional, or [physical condition. (That she was feeling uneasy would be, but as to what she allegedly heard, it would not.)
Not a present sense impression because it was not made in concert with an act or conduct.
ALL of which is just my opinion.
