Number Of People Missing Rises To 159 In Surfside Condo Building Collapse
NPR ^ | June 25, 2021 | Kaurek Wamsley

Posted on 06/25/2021 9:05:21 AM PDT by BenLurkin

There are now 159 people unaccounted for in the partial building collapse in Surfside, Fla., Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Friday — a rise from 99 people a day earlier.

Three more bodies were found in the rubble, bringing the number of fatalities so far to four. More than 100 people have already been accounted for.

"I want to be very clear about the numbers," Levine Cava said at a press conference Friday. "They're very fluid. We'll continue to update you as we have them."

"We will continue search and rescue because we still have hope that we will find people alive," Levine Cava said. "That is why we are using our dogs and our sonar and our cameras — everything possible to seek places where there may still be people to be found."

"As we work tirelessly and stand united — local municipal, county, state and now federal support — we are going to work as hard as we can to continue our search-and-rescue effort," Levine Cava said. "That is our priority, that is where we're focused and protecting our first responders who are on the scene."

She said that people evacuated from the building are being provided food, shelter, cash to assist with their basic needs and grief counseling at a family reunification center.

President Biden approved an emergency declaration on Friday morning authorizing the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts.

The cause of the building's sudden collapse early Thursday morning remains unclear.

A reunification center has been established near the site of the building where families and friends await any news of their loved ones.

Wow! They use sea water to make the concrete? That’s a recipe for disaster right there. Or full employment for the high-rise construction industry, at least.

The local papers should be broadcasting the contractor names who built the building.

It was known to be faulty (shifting and sinking foundation) for over a decade.

And criminal charges should be pursued if fault is found.

There is a construction technique where all floor slabs are formed and poured at ground level and then jacked up along columns to their final floor…Then they are anchored to the columns…don’t know if that was the case here…I suspect substandard concrete and/or foundation issues…

Jimmy Carters interest rates in 81” were around 13%, I can see lots of corners being cut for saving money.

Don’t forget the building inspectors. If this was a collapse due to faulty construction, the inspectors were either in on it or were criminally negligent.

How many just walked away from whatever demons they had in their life, just to have a relative cash in on whatever grants the government will offer? How many walked away from 9/11?

4) Was built on “reclaimed” wetlands. Meaning it was ocean before they decided to make it a land mass.

5) What is called “concrete cancer”. The sea/salt can cause corrosion to the rebar inside and make it very, unstable. Since it was already sinking slowly, that would make this situation worse.

“I wonder how long before they blame the building’s collapse on “climate change””

They already have. Not kidding. Something about water levels rising causing the ground to be unstable. You didn’t really think the climate change religion wasn’t going to throw that out there, did you? ;>)

Miami Beach has some serious $$$. South Florida is like a sauna bath at this time of year.I can easily imagine the owners of many units spending the winter there and the summer in the Hamptons,on Martha's Vineyard, etc thus leaving the units empty.

"Something is being covered up."

I read something recently that McAfee owned one of the units in that building. No idea whether or not that's true, and I took it with a grain of salt.

“Contractors have been known to cut corners.”

OK, low bid won the contract so how to make a buck? “Short mixing” concrete, cal-cloride to speed cold weather setting of concrete/mortar mix, imported sheet-rock and other tricks of the trade. End of the day; “no one will know because it’s covered with concrete”.

I wonder if this building was experiencing concrete spalling. On google street view, you can see areas of the balconies where the concrete had fallen off and the rusted rebar was exposed.

Not the case here, but it probably did incorporate “post-tensioned” floors. That’s where a series of post-tensioning cables (called “strand”) are cast into the concrete, and then tensioned before the forms are removed and jumped to the next floor. This allows a thinner concrete deck for the same span.

There’s never one single cause with a catastrophic collapse like this. One big clue though is that owners were complaining of significant cracks in concrete elements (not clear if it was a precast wall or part of the cast-in-place structure), which might indicate movement of the building.

The fact that they had an engineer doing an evaluation should mean that we’ll eventually find out what went wrong, and allow building codes to be updated to address those issue.

It didn’t take them long at all. The lefty opportunists are screeching about it all over the media.

Prayers up for all affected by this.

No. It was swamp land.
