We use to do bad things to enemy combatants.
If not, then these funds were free to be used for WuHuFlu development. And even if they restricted the use of funds - that would make funds usually used for that use to be freed up for use on WuHuFlu.
It doesn't really matter if you put it into the left or the right pant's pocket - the pants still has use of both.

Regarding the Google funding, one must recognize two essential facts.
1) The particular project reported here did not involve horseshoe bats and the coronaviruses they harbor. (Fructivore bats are large bats that eat fruit (suborder Macrochiroptera). They are a very small, but not insignificant, part of the south Asian diet. Horseshoe bats are very small insectivores that are scientifically called microbats (suborder Microchiroptera). They are much too small to serve as a significant source of protein in the human diet and have no commercial market.)
2) Money is fungible. Even though Google funded virological research at Wuhan that was unrelated to coronaviruses, their contributions enhanced the technological expertise of CCP scientists. Such expertise was necessary to conduct later gain-of-function research into coronaviruses, and that research unleashed a catastrophic plague of Biblical proportion.
