HENDERSON, Nev. -- Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib on Monday became the first active NFL player to come out as gay.

Nassib, 28, made the announcement in an Instagram post.

"What's up people?" Nassib posted. "I'm at my house here in West Chester, Pennsylvania. I just want to take a quick moment to say that I'm gay. I've been meaning to do this for a while now, but I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest. I really have the best life, I've got the best family, friends and job a guy could ask for.

"I'm a pretty private person so I hope you guys know that I'm really not doing this for attention. I just think that representation and visibility are so important. I actually hope that like one day, videos like this and the whole coming-out process are just not necessary. But until then, I'm going to do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture that's accepting, that's compassionate and I'm going to start by donating $100,000 to the Trevor Project."

Carl Nassib Bio Blast

• 3rd-round pick of Browns in 2016 NFL draft • 20.5 career sacks in 73 games (37 starts) for the Browns, Buccaneers and Raiders • Signed 3-year contract with Raiders in March 2020 • Recorded 1st career interception in Week 10 of 2020 vs. Broncos • Won the Lombardi Award as the best college football lineman/linebacker in 2015 while at Penn State • Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2015

The Trevor Project provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to the LGBTQ+ community. It commended Nassib's announcement, saying in a statement that his donation will help it "scale our life-saving crisis services to reach the more than 1.8 million LGBTQ youth who seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S."

Said Nassib: "They're an incredible organization, they're the No. 1 suicide-prevention service for LGBTQ youth in America. And they're truly doing incredible things. And I'm very excited to be a part of it, help in any way that I can and I'm really pumped to see what the future holds."

Reaction to Nassib's announcement was immediate throughout the NFL and sports world overall.

In a statement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league "is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today."

"Representation matters," Goodell said. "We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be newsworthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. We wish Carl the best of luck this coming season."

NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith added: "Our union supports Carl and his work with the Trevor Project is proof that he -- like our membership -- is about making his community and this world a better place not for themselves, but for others."

After Nassib's announcement, Raiders owner Mark Davis told ESPN: "It's 2021. All the more power to Carl. It doesn't change my opinion of him as a person or as a Raider." Coach Jon Gruden added via text message to ESPN: "I learned a long time ago what makes a man different is what makes him great."

The team also responded to Nassib's post on Instagram with three black hearts as well as with a tweet:

Proud of you, Carl 🖤 pic.twitter.com/R9aJxYFefW

— Las Vegas Raiders (@Raiders) June 21, 2021 James Franklin, Nassib's former coach at Penn State, said, "Carl's brave announcement will forge a path for others to be true to their authentic self. I was proud of Carl when he led the nation in sacks, but I'm even more proud of him now."

GLAAD, an LGBTQ advocacy organization, called Nassib's announcement "a historic reflection of the growing state of LGBTQ visibility and inclusion in the world of professional sports."

"... Carl Nassib's story will not only have a profound impact on the future of LGBTQ visibility and acceptance in sports, but sends a strong message to so many LGBTQ people, especially youth, that they too can one day grow up to be and succeed as a professional athlete like him," GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement.

EDITOR'S PICKS

Social media reacts to Carl Nassib's announcement that he's gay Nassib joined the Raiders in 2020 as a free agent on a three-year, $25 million deal, with $16.75 million guaranteed. He had 2.5 sacks and an interception in 14 games, with five starts, for Las Vegas last season.

A third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2016, Nassib also played two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before joining the Raiders. He came to national attention as a star of the Browns' "Hard Knocks" appearance in 2018, giving financial advice to teammates and offering his take on the existence of aliens.

Former Missouri linebacker Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted in NFL history in 2014, when the Rams took him 249th overall. He was cut by the team at the end of training camp that year and never played a regular-season game in the NFL.

Ryan Russell, a free agent at the time after playing three seasons between the Dallas Cowboys and Buccaneers, came out as bisexual in a story published by ESPN in 2019.

So they think shoving this abomination in our faces is going to persuade us to 'accept' their depravity? (rhetorical question)

I'm thinking that there are a couple of other reasons now:

a. It's a big F.U. to normal and to classic America

b. To determine who is against this and add us to a 'list'

Sex in the rectum will never be accepted by normal people. (sorry to be so graphic but it needs to be described for what it is)

“Can we PLEASE stop acknowledging this perverse/abnormal/abhorrent behavior?! Why does .001% of the population DOMINATE every damn’ news cycle, every damn’ thing in our society!? ENOUGH ALREADY!”

I remember in the 70s when this first starting to be an issue, the homos were just pleading for tolerance. A few years later it became acceptance. Then what was originally a shame, became a pride. Now it’s compelling the rest of us to celebrate their deviancy and delusions above even motherhood.

Mothers get one day a year of celebration, the homos and their fellow delusional get a whole month.

Thing is, you cannot blame them for this state of affairs. It is the rest of the population that has succumbed to supporting this propaganda and guilt tripping that is responsible. Without the widespread support of the normals (soon to be declared the abnormal) this would not be happening. And the reason it’s receiving this support is because much of the population has been convinced that there is no societal harm in such abnormality or deviancy.

There a general rule that can be formulated from that observation - “Any human deviancy will eventually be accepted as normal (normalized) as long as it is PERCEIVED to do no societal harm”

Thing is we don’t know if what you perceive to be true now will be true in the long run.

Also what happens if a culture that is dominated by this level of deviancy and delusion comes into conflict with a culture that is more in touch with reality and traditional values - who will win that conflict?

I’m specifically referring to China, Russia, and Islam.

"WHY is it so important to these people that we must know their sexual preferences?"

lets be honest.....why is it important to these people that we must know that they like to stick their peckers up rectums?....

I see your points. And I do agree with some of them.

But…… how about we concentrate our efforts on who is on our local zoning boards, school boards, city councils, county commissions, tax commissioners, tax assessors and most importantly, our local and state GOP apparatus.

They’re the ones that are destroying this country, one small town, county and state at a time.

Newton County, Georgia…..$26,000,000 vanished……no investigation, no one held accountable

Movie studio goes in, no input from the taxpayers, get tax breaks. Most, if not all, of the people working there live someplace else. So no money into the local economy except maybe for some gas.

Newton County/Covington….former pasture land now becoming a shopping center. Mayor Ronnie Johnston promised great shops and lmsort of stuff. Most of the county live at or below the poverty level. Covington has $600k homes on one side of the square, $50k homes on the other.

Publix is coming but only if there’s enough people for the store. Of course even thought there are 3 other grocery store within a couple of miles, Publix is coming because they’re building an apartment complex. Given that I’m seeing more and more
Folks that look like they recently came across our southern border, who do you think is going to fill up those apartments. Not you and me.
I hope that Publix has a budget for the off duty cops they’re going to have to hire for all the shoplifting.
Oh yeah, former mayor Johnston admits that most of the stores he said were going to come, aren’t coming.
Wonder/Dacula…..huge tech and research complex fling in. Slowly and very quietly acquired all the land, with the governments help. The folks backing and planning the development actually stated “we kept the deal quiet so we could get the land cheaper.

That’s our government in action

So, yes, am I tired of this demographic being everywhere and getting a larger voice? Yes

But bigger fish to fry.

he probably is on the “down” side of his career and if he broadcasts that he is a homo then the coaches will be reluctant to release him because he can come back and complain of homophobia....

So a current NFL player has announced he's gay, wow. I feel like this would have been big news if it was a star player and/or it was 5 years ago but this just feels....anticlimactic.

"I don't see how anyone could be gay at time like this!! With forced vaccinations for the Wu Tang Clan flu and a geriatric perv occupying the White House. I sure haven't been having a gay old time!

No no, by 'gay' I meant that he's a rump spelunker.

"A what?."

He likes to explore dirty caves, whilst naked.

"Eww! That sounds like something someone should keep to themselves."

"So are we gonna interview this guy?"

Sure, why not? Joining us is Las Vegas Raiders Defensive End......I'm sorry I forgot your name pal.

"I'm Carl...something."

Whatcha got there?

"Isn't it nice? 10 minutes after I came out there was a knock on my door and Roger Goodell and the President of ESPN gave me this award, they were crying, I was crying, my dad was crying and then he took his shotgun into the bathroom, it was all very emotional!"

So you're a defensive end? I think it would have been funnier if you were a tight end.

"Oh my end hasn't been very tight since I started seeing Tyrone. Pretty soon I'm gonna be a wide reciever."

"This is fantastic!"

"Al Davis!! Why would you say that?"

"Why the jersey sales of course! Think about, that's why it's so great it's some nodbody on his third team in four years, we sold one jersey of his, just one, to some guy named Tyrone. And now? They're going like hotcakes! Making us a fortune, well not me personally since unfortunately I no longer own the team."

"Oh no why is it that, did you have to sell it?"

"No dear, I'm dead. I mean, look at me."

The last resort of hated white men with toxic masculinity is to find refuge in homosexuality.

I’m gay, and so is my wife kinda thing...

In a month or two he will be claim8ng that he isn’ t Being played because of his gayness.
