SAN JOSE (KPIX) — A woman died and two men were injured after a suspected drunk driver plowed his truck into the outdoor patio of Agave Sports Bar & Grill Friday night, according to San Jose police and witnesses.
San Jose police said Alex Moreno was being held Saturday in Santa Clara County jail for felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The woman who died has not yet been identified.
According to police, officers responded to calls of a vehicle careening into the outside dining area of the sports bar and grill located at 544 Alma Avenue at around 9 p.m.
Investigators said Moreno was sitting in a parked white 2017 Chevrolet Silverado truck when he accidentally placed the vehicle in reverse and proceeded to backup at a high rate of speed.
He struck three restaurant patrons — one adult female and two adult males — that were sitting in the outdoor dining area.
All three were transported to a local hospital where the female victim succumbed to her injuries. The two men suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A woman who was a passenger in the truck was uninjured.
“I saw two injured people and, frankly, they looked pretty bad,” said eyewitness Susan Lizarazo. “One woman looked far worse than the others. It was really, really bad.”
Lizarazo says she was saved by an alert friend.
“I’m so grateful that my friend grabbed and pulled me away because the pickup truck was coming in my direction,” Susan Lizarazo told KPIX. “I was panicking and in shock and I still feel that way at this moment.”
This was San Jose’s 24th fatal collision and 25th victim of 2021.
Anyone with information on the crash is urged to contact Detective O’Brien #3527 of the San José Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit at 408-277-4654.
When the crash occurred, the driver actually had a woman next to him...She later told cops that she had her head down and did not realize that the truck was moving...
By the way, the suspect got kicked out of the bar...He looked too drunk...He was seen using cocaine...He tried to remove a woman's shirt...
Driver Charged In Deadly Crash Into San Jose Sports Bar Reportedly Was Having Sex
Terrible story.
So it sounds like it might have been intentional?
Horrible.
World according to Garp.
More parklet idiocy.
For those of you living in saner parts of the US, “Parklets” are hastily assembled outdoor patios built on the street. In parking places.
What could go wrong?
For our safety the restaurants are seating us in the streets. No health or safety code. Just the irrational fear that you might catch Covid if you sit inside.
They are all over the San Francisco Bay Area, taking away parking, feeding rats and putting us all in harm’s way under the guise of “safety.”
I’m assuming it was a parklet. “Outdoor dining patio.” Maybe not. But my opinion of them remains!! Poor souls.
This seems to be happening quite a bit here lately, at least one report like this every single week.
Are most of these drivers illegals?
I’m not seeing indications of Jihad intent, at least not here.
Was he wearing a mask at the time?
Hate crime?
I've been to a few places where they've closed that part of the street. In that case, it's okay. If you're driving, you'll have to go all the way around the block, instead of driving straight on the street like you normally would.
Closing the street of course makes it safer but also takes away parking and access.
Hope she bit his johnson off.
It seems like there a lot of cars killing people lately.
Time to ban cars!
Rock N Rock Cyclery in OC County, CA had an accident a few years ago and as I recall an older lady ran into the front of their store. They installed concrete barriers as part of their repairs.
Just one reason, of many, why I never sit in outside venues at restaurants...
“The woman told investigators that she began performing oral sex on Moreno and didn’t realize it was moving, the Chronicle said.”
Hmmmm...
He was getting a BJ. That is not a hate crime.
