Recent reports of COVID-19 infections aboard cruise ships — along with simple math — suggest that it will be nearly impossible for any cruise line to return to the seas without the coronavirus lurking.
All vaccines are less than 100% effective, so chances are strong that at least some passengers will be infected among the thousands aboard even “fully vaccinated” voyages.
Chances of more severe outbreaks are even greater in light of a court ruling Friday in favor of Gov. Ron DeSantis, who wants to stop cruise lines from requiring vaccinations.
Cruise lines faced with infections will have to perform a delicate balancing act of preventing the virus’ spread while minimizing inconveniences to uninfected passengers and crew members.
Failure to succeed on either front could spark a public relations nightmare and diminish consumers’ confidence in cruise lines’ abilities to protect passengers, experts say.
Looming over the industry’s resumption is a shared desire of industry workers, health officials and passengers to avoid a replay of the gut-wrenching drama of spring 2020, when outbreaks turned numerous ships at sea into disaster zones.
Bob Jarvis, a law professor at Nova Southeastern University, says the industry should expect infections to occur on every ship.

“Why shouldn’t the same thing happen with Coronavirus?”
The people taking cruises are going to find out.
I wouldn’t take one for free if NORO and COVID didn’t exist, but that’s just me. Maybe I’d take one those river cruises on a boat that holds about 50 people. Nah, probably not. I like to call my shots when I travel.
You must have read these paragraphs in the article.- Tom
“There’s no doubt there will be COVID cases on ships” as cruise lines resume operations from Florida ports and elsewhere over the coming weeks, said Michael Winkleman, a Miami-based maritime attorney. “July is critically important for the entire industry. They’re going to be under a microscope. It’s important for them to get it right.”
If they get it wrong — if an outbreak infects enough passengers that a ship will be forced to cut its voyage short and return to its home port — “there’s a chance that all voyages could be canceled for the rest of 2021,” Winkleman said.
RC also issued a bunch of gobbledey-gook about how they are going to mask full-time indoors, and separate vaccinated from unvaccinated -- but outside of dining and shows, nothing about how to keep that same mix of people from using ClubRoyale or SeaPass on common areas of the ship like the casino and the adult beverages therein which require mask removal to drink cough cough lofl...
“Shhhh ... I hear a danger lurking!”
Here is the data from Wikipedia, for reference.
Note that of the 14 deaths, five were in their 80s, five were in their 70s, one was in their 60s, and three families declined to state.
Also, of the 696 people who tested positive, 410 (59%) were asymptomatic.

Will it be lurking in the halls like a Land Shark, knocking on cabin doors posing as a Jehovah’s Witness?
EVERY virus “lurks” EVERYWHERE in this world.
We’ve ALWAYS lived with them and we always will.
Sorry folks - we GET sick once in a while..
and, oh yeah... we’re all gonna die from something sometime.
NOBODY gets a pass.
Our society needs to grow up and deal with that fact.
There is no way to prevent hit pieces that will try to make anyone who is “diagnosed” with Covid after being on a Cruise ship into a media spectacle. We have already seen the havoc intentional false positives using the 40 times oversampled has produced. These a$$clowns like Winkleman are looking for a big payday. It has all been a steaming load of nonsense since the Diamond Princess.
It’s mutating every 10 hours as it is.
Exactly, what it proved was that at least 50% of the population had a cross immunity to the virus. If hygiene had been practiced then the results would have been better, we learned a lot from that data that was ignored by the CDC and NIH.
“Our society needs to grow up”
That’s all you need right there. Too many of today’s “conservatives” sound like liberals from a some years ago, just before liberals went completely off the planet mentally.
Communism is lurking.
On cruise ships, heart attacks are common. So is Norovirus. And colds, flu, you name it. Covid “infections” are no more dangerous than heart attacks. Why everyone freaks out when tested positive for covid? All it means is you were exposed to the virus and your body is handling it well if you are asymptomatic. It is really not an “infection” if you are asymptomatic.
Those 2 passengers on a recent cruise who tested positive were NOT sick. They did not even pass on the “infection” to anyone else.
With majority of passengers on upcoming cruises already vaccinated, I see less deaths on cruise ships from covid than on land.
The Shun-Sentinel is garbage news.
So will plenty of other diseases.

"Covidgram!"
The cruise lines have fended off and frustrated the American litigious law firms and ambulance chasers, by flagging the vessels in foreign countries.
Could you imagine the endless lawsuits by disgruntled cruisers being pushed by the American lawyers if the Cruise ships were American flagged.
I realize our small river cruise boats are American flagged, as is one cruise ship in Hawaii, but these big cruise ships hold 2,00-5,000 passengers not a few hundred, and travel worldwide in some rough water and to some rough ports. -Tom
The biggest issue will be the food poisoning that occurs.
