my husband built 3foot tall, 4x4ft pallet raised beds this spring....11 of them...he's still collectiong more FREE pallets as we go, but we're set for this year....filled them with old wood, wood chips, pine cones then a mix of tree compost, planting soil, peat moss.....
my garden is doing pretty good...
got most tomatoes staked and growing up a twine....first time I've done this so we'll see how it goes...
got other tomatoes just growing up by themselves with a couple of staked but I'm not worried about getting them trailing up yet....
peppers are slo...
GOT ZUCHINNI though...garlic will be ready in two weeks....been using parsley, lettuce from the garden...
still very dry hear in Eastern Washington....having to hand water every couple of days...mulching where I can....
me too....I over did it on the zuchs and winter squash, although at this point I can't really tell one from the other....
dollar store to the rescue....my kick the last two trips was buying those light up at night flowers that you stick in the ground, except I'm keeping mine in a base on the deck just in case of power outages...surprisingly bright..

I’m trying my hand at bougainvillea plants that I bought online. I first saw them in San Anselmo where my son lives. I had to look them up, then remembered that some places in Florida have them in abundance too. So I’m hoping to have them as starters now, and overwinter with grow lights, and maybe just maybe if I’m good enough, something will survive long enough for me to enjoy the beauty here in central Indiana.
Also, if anyone has tips on bromeliads, I would love some input. I have a plant that I’ve been nursing for 2 years. In Florida they are prolific and like mottled sun to my understanding. They are sold as indoor plants in the Midwest, and now the plant I’ve been caring for has two babies. I’d love to know when and how to transplant those.

Easy to make - bowl, 2 cup hooks, a wine cork & some super glue.
Drill a small hole in bowl, big enough to get your cup hook, screw end, inserted. I used super glue around the hole to help hole the cup hook tight.
Screw the 2nd cup hook into the wine cork. I think the ‘plastic’ ones work better than actual cork (more ‘solid’). I put super glue on the cup hook threads & around the hole so the cup hook is tightly attached to the cork.
Then thread the end of the cup hook sticking through to the inside of the bowl into the other end of your cork - again, use super glue.
That’s it - very simple! Good luck & I hope you can find a good bowl at Dollar Store. :-)

My understanding is that animals dislike strong scented plants.
Marigolds are said to discourage them, too.
Oregano and marjoram also grow like ground covers. Thyme is beautiful when it flowers, which is this time of year.
You could very easily surreptitiously do an herb garden in spite of the HOA, IMO.
Go out at night, they will all be in the nest. Throw a heavy towel over it and pull it off. Wear gloves just in case.
OY that’s a site you can get lost in and some mushrooms look so much alike. I highly advise searching by state it will save you a lot of time, that’s if you really want to be sure.
It is in the ground. I am going to use 50 mix of Dr bonner Castille soap.
I think you’re right about the herb garden. It’s the idea of fruits and vegetables in the ground that are their biggest garden complaints. There’s someone new to the board that is giddy with her power now, and is going house by house looking for wrongdoing. I have several neighbors that have gotten written complaints, and worse even, threats to sue them and put liens on their homes. It’s gotten ridiculous.
What it means for us is that we will likely keep our noses clean for a few more years until my husband retires. I don’t want to have to move. This place is the first place that has felt like home to me. We have woods and a little creek in the backyard. We’ve turned this place into a sanctuary of sorts.
Those ground bees are awful very aggressive. Bronners will not phase them. Can you use boiling water with some vinegar in it??
Why don’t you and your neighbors go to the HOA control freaks and talk to them?
Or vote them out?

Plus when you are done pouring have a flat rock or brick to set down over the hole.
Yes, put a clear bowl over the hole with a rock on top and leave it there all night and tomorrow. Windex will kill them, WD40, ammonia, bleach or wasp spray with a straw on the can. I use a small amount of gas and a bowl. Maybe 4 or 6 ounces then cover and the fumes get them. Just don’t light a match after that, your ground can collapse like a sinkhole if the nest is big enough. If you’ve seen the big grey hornets nest up in trees, that’s exactly what the underground nest looks like if you dig it up.
