Woman Scalds 81-Year-Old Husband With Deadly Mixture Of Water, Sugar To 'Extract Revenge'

A woman seeking to “extract revenge” against her husband has been found guilty scalding him to death with a fatal mixture of boiling water and sugar.

Corinna Smith, 59, was convicted of murder for the July 14, 2020 attack of her 81-year-old husband, Michael Baines, at their shared home in Neston, Cheshire, England. Smith filled a garden bucket with the scalding hot liquid and threw it onto Baines’ arms and torso as he slept. She then fled to a neighbor’s house and admitted what she’d just done, according to local news outlet Cheshire Live.

“I’ve hurt him really bad,” she cried to her neighbors. “I think I’ve killed him.”

When first responders arrived at the scene, they found Baines whimpering in bed. The liquid caused the flesh of his arm and hand to peel off.

“The sugar placed into the water makes it vicious,” said Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hughes of the Cheshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Directorate, according to the New York Post. “It becomes thicker and stickier and sinks into the skin better. It left Michael in agony, and rather than call the emergency services, she wasted time by going to a house nine doors away to tell a neighbor, who she wasn’t close to, what she had done.”

Baines initially survived the attack and was rushed to Whiston Hospital. However, he died of his injuries a month later in the hospital.

Initially, Smith was charged with grievous bodily harm. Those charges were upgraded to murder upon her husband’s death.(snip)

It was not clear what events provoked the attack.

Smith was found guilty of murder on Tuesday after a five-day trial at Chester Crown Court.

Wonder if he would have survived if he’d been somewhere without socialized medicine

Mixture Of Water, Sugar To...

Clearly the boiling water was uncalled for, but the sugar was just to sweeten the deal.

Attacking someone with boiling water is bad.
Adding sugar to it to make it sticky is really taking it to another level. You have to put some thought and effort into the attack.

What a hateful B**ch! Just divorce him if it’s that bad.
At age 81, I doubt if it was because he was ‘seeing other people”.
The trial took a whole five hours to convince the jury she was guilty? Should be an Open & Shut case.

Interesting. A mixture not unlike what they call "Prison Lava".

The UK’s National Health Service, quintessential socialized medicine, is a nightmare and a disgrace. Death panels, quality of life scores, rationing, waiting lists, crumbling infrastructure, shortages of doctors & nurses, lack of equipment & supplies, non-availability of life saving/prolonging medicines & treatments. I wouldn’t go to the UK on a bet. The 81 y/o victim didn’t stand a chance in that rotten system. My guess is infection, sepsis, death.

Dying from burns is one of the most horrible ways to die. The woman deserves the same death.

Horrible, prayers for the deceased and loved ones.

Sugar also raises the boiling point of water: "Adding sugar to water increases the boiling point. Adding 1 gram of sugar, or any other substance that does not create ions, increases the boiling point of a liter of water by 0.94 degrees Fahrenheit above its normal 212 degrees Fahrenheit."

Almost seems like she knew what she was doing.

Also where water boils at 212*F at sea level, by adding sugar depending on how much is added the TEMP will rise as much as 300*F (think hard candy)

- “The sugar placed into the water makes it vicious,” -???

Vicious water is terrible. Not sure if it's a transcription error or copied as is, but the article now correctly states it was "viscous".
