WASHINGTON, Monday, June 17.
The statement relative to the retention of rebels in the Treasury Department are sheer fabrications, and of course do great injustice to Secretary CHASE. The oath of allegiance was as promptly administered to the employes in that Department as in either of the other Departments, and as generally subscribed by the clerks as by any of the Government employes. Nor is it true that Secretary CHASE retains men in office who are known to entertain secession sentiments. I know that any fair evidence that a man sympathizes with the rebels would insure his dismissal before the sun went down. In the case of the Sixth Auditor's office, and the stampede of Secessionists from there when the oath of allegiance was administered, and about which so much has been said, the facts were that the names of every one of those who refused to take the oath were registered for dismissal as fast as competent persons could be found to take their places. This these clerks well knew, and they did but anticipate by a few days the decision of the Secretary. Nor is it true that Mr. CHASE is not giving to the Republicans a fair share of the patronage of his Department. It is no easy thing to find persons fitted for the discharge of duties connected with the Treasury, and it is not proper to make rapid changes in the different bureaus; but Mr. CHASE is doing all in this direction that an honest regard for the interests of the Government will justify.
The Sixty-ninth was not long out of the intrenchments last night. As I supposed, it turned out to be a movement for practicing the men in "double quick" duty.
