Living with obesity: The people who are hard-wired to store fat
BBC ^ | By Claire Kendall and Jeremy Cooke

Posted on 06/17/2021 8:24:09 AM PDT by BenLurkin

Shaw Somers, a consultant surgeon who specialises in weight-loss operations, has been treating people with severe obesity for many years. He says people like Sarah, who have an inherited set of certain genes, are much more likely to develop obesity compared with those who don't.

Historically, he says, people with these genetics would have done well in a famine, but with today's plentiful, high-calorie food they will put on weight "without strong determination and support".

Dr Denise Ratcliffe, a clinical psychologist...says that many of the people she sees, have experienced trauma, abuse or neglect, for example, which leads to a dysfunctional relationship with food.

Both the genetic and psychological components of obesity can be amplified when there is easy access to fatty, sugar-laden foods, which are available cheaply and conveniently.

Dr Abd Tahrani, a senior lecturer in obesity medicine at the University of Birmingham, says there are a lot of people who are "biologically pre-designed to conserve energy", which is stored as fat. He explains that signals from the hypothalamus - the part of the brain that controls appetite - bombard the person with feelings of hunger and a desire to eat, that are almost impossible to fight.

For many scientists and doctors who have developed a deep understanding of obesity, the condition is a complex illness driven by a combination of factors. To blame someone for suffering with that illness flies in the face of the scientific evidence, they say.

"If blame worked," says Dr Abd Tahrani, "we would have a very thin society by now. Everybody who has obesity has been blamed an endless amount of times, either by their doctors, by their neighbours or their family, or wider society. It's not working, please stop it."

I’m hard-wired to sit on the couch eating potato chips and watching Jerry Springer.

It’s not my fault I have a weight issue...

Yeah somehow you don’t see obese people in third world countries. They don’t worry if they are non binary either.

Its pure math.
You put on 1lb/year and suddenly 50 years later, you have a problem.

As a formerly obese person I will tell you that this quote gets to the heart of the issue.

‘ Dr Denise Ratcliffe, a clinical psychologist...says that many of the people she sees, have experienced trauma, abuse or neglect, for example, which leads to a dysfunctional relationship with food.’

At the end of the day this is about eating habits along with a sedentary lifestyle. The emotional attachment to food is real and is no small thing. Giving up those habits is incredibly hard. Returning to those habits after success is highly likely if the underlying issues aren’t addressed. Emotional and psychological issues that is.

Down 70 pounds from 276 to 206. Took me about nine months and the challenges in the beginning were hard. Regained 35 pounds on 2020. Have taken that back off and am addressing the things that drive old eating habits.

A lesson on self control and gluttony might help.

Another thing to be depressed about. Get in line with the rest.

One thing I noticed a long time ago is that dieting and denial of eating what we want to achieve weight loss are “against nature.” “Unnatural acts.”

Although those expressions are usually used to apply to the behavior of Dems (bestiality, child molestation and especially same sex “marriage”) I think it is unnatural to go against eating what we want and like. Natural: double cheeseburger with mayo, mashed potatoes and gravy, piece of chocolate cake, , big dish of ice cream. Unnatural: Salad with non-caloric vinegar dressing, 2 hardboiled egg whites, a third of a fresh apple. And going hungry.

But when the last ice age happened, the ones who survived to have dna transmitted to offspring were able to efficiently store lots of body fat. Others died out.

You can’t put it on if you don’t eat it.

I have the metabolism of a tree sloth.

And have to limit my caloric intake accordingly and move as much as I can.

Sucks to be me since I have the appetite of a stevedore. And I loathe working out.

It is what it is.

If you are hard-wired to store fat, then you are eating carbs which are poisonous to you. You can only store fat when producing insulin. Insulin is produced in the presents of sugar in the blood. Stop it. Eat only meat. You will lose weight. You can eat as many hams as you like (not the honey sweet ham). Eat steaks. Eat eggs and bacon. Sugar, flour and corn are poison. Some people can eat it just fine. You can’t. So stop the whining. And start a carnivore life. You will live longer and be much thinner.

I’ve never seen a picture of a fat, let alone obese North Korean, except for the little guy with the bad haircut.

Also over the past decade or so Venezuelans seem to have lost that hard-wiring that causes them to store fat.

I wonder what caused that miracle.

Yep, keep selling the notion that is normal, healthy, okay. Never mind the impact on lives, emotions, mental health, our economy, our healthcare systems...

Funny I don’t remember this many fat people in the 60s 70s 80s 90s ....

I know how weight goes and I’ve had Graves since 1987.

You eat more than you burn you get fat....

It’s not complicated....I run tween 225-250 and I’m six five and sad to say I’m near too range now and my brooks brothers polo is protruding ...my rib is patient to her credit and she like 20.1 BMI...

I’m 27.8....so trust me I understand eating

But america is morbidly obese...some segments racially and ethnically and socio economic classes are majority obese especially the women

There is no stigma anymore to being squint eyed sumo fat and pasty

It’s crazy

Yeah somehow you don’t see obese people in third world countries.

There's a growing problem with obesity in both China and India - third world nations which have about half of the world's population between them. The human race evolved under conditions where starvation was the concern - not getting fat. Our bodies have evolved to store fat efficiently and don't give it up easily.
