Senator Chuck Schumer over the weekend referred to mentally disabled children as “retarded.”
During a podcast interview regarding public housing, Schumer said: “I wanted to build when I first was an Assemblyman, they wanted to build a congregate living place for retarded children."
“The whole neighborhood was against it, these are homeless kids. They just needed some help.”

Retarded is not a bad word. In my opinion. It means growth is delayed or insufficient. That is the case with those who have developmental problems. Sure it can be said in a hateful way but so can anything. I don’t find it offensive.

You can use all sorts of decent words as ugly slurs if you are so minded, but this is a stupid kerfuffle.
I agree. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with or inaccurate about that word. It is only “disrespectful” because some harpies decided one day that a more “sensitive” alternative is needed. But, frankly, I don’t see how “mentally disabled” is that different one way or the other.
