The biophysical modeling study, published in The Lancet Planetary Health, challenges outdated public health guidance that discourages fan use in temperatures higher than 35 degrees Celsius / 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Based on human studies carried out at the University of Sydney's Thermal Ergonomics Laboratory, the researchers developed a model to determine the humidity-dependent temperature thresholds at which fans could become detrimental, providing conditions that exacerbate heat stress.
"The effectiveness of a fan depends on temperature and relative humidity and our previous human studies have shown that it is only when the air temperature is very high and humidity is extremely low that fans can be detrimental," said senior author Professor Ollie Jay…
Specifically, they propose that the simplified fan use temperature threshold of 35°C currently recommended by the WHO should be increased to 39°C for young healthy adults, 38°C for healthy adults older than 65 years, and 37°C for older adults taking anticholinergic medication.

Very high temperature and very low humidity describes the climate of Tucson where I lived for a decade. A fan under those conditions is like a dry wind, cooling only by drying you out, likely to turn you into a raisin and you won’t even know it. Evaporative “swamp” coolers worked great much of the year except during monsoon season when they turned your house, well, swampy.
The HELL they say.
> These people need to live here for just ONE Summer, and they’ll change their tune!
Be careful what you say. They may show up!
These folks must have multiple college degrees.

Double plus good, brother!
I live in Mississippi. Air conditioning is most definitely neccessary here. Although, I did live without it as a kid. Slept with a fan a few inches away, blowing right on you, and still soaked the sheets with sweat every night.
A fan and an air conditioner are two entirely different things.🙄
Try Longboat Key, Florida in July. :)
My sister and I went to visit our grandparents and we set out at 8am for the beach. A 20 minute walk.
Within 5 minutes we were both drenched in sweat. That azure blue water never looked so good!
Please see my post #69. Florida is brutal in the summer.
During the hurricane seasons of 2004 & 2005, with power knocked out for months across wide areas, many folks, mostly elderly, had to leave. In mid-August, they couldn't breathe. Literally.
I had a friend who had just moved to Port Charlotte a year before. He chose to stay, even with two hurricanes busting up his house within a three week period. But about a month in, the humidity turned everything in the house black with mold in a matter of days. It was remarkable. I helped him clean up and salvage what we could, and he went back north.
Yeah, no kidding! I like Tampa and the Gulf Coast...in the winter
Amen neighbor!
Way I see it is........ You first a hole. Lead by example.
Yup......same principle.
Wow. I believe it, that the elderly couldn’t breathe. Massive heat and humidity are stifling.
My grandfather’s house was a second home for us. But he and Gramma came up to Chicago every summer.
I am sorry about your friend. Black mold is very dangerous.
Take care, FRiend!
Julie :)
Bkmk
It’s not too bad over here in Vero. But, we’re in a boat on a mooring ball. WE get a nice ocean breeze most days, so, the fans work. If it gets too bad, we go hang out in the boaters lounge.
I grew up first 17 years of my life in Jackson MS
Average summer highs mid 90s
Humidity in summer 87% and up average in summer
No air conditioning till 1972 aged 15
I’m not advocating it.....no way....it’s uncomfortable
Not sure how folks did it in the olden times
