Blood sugar control among adults with diabetes in the United States declined significantly in the past decade, according to a nationwide study. The findings highlight the ongoing challenges of controlling one of the nation's most prevalent chronic health conditions.
The researchers…used data from an annual government-sponsored health study to analyze trends in blood sugar (or "glycemic") control, as well as blood pressure and cholesterol control among adults with diabetes.
They found that the proportion of adults with diabetes achieving glycemic control improved from 1999 through the next 10 years, but then declined significantly—dropping from 57.4 percent during 2007-2010 to 50.5 percent during 2015-2018. There was also drop in the proportion achieving blood pressure control, while the proportion achieving cholesterol control essentially leveled off.
"These are concerning findings. There has been a real decline in glycemic control from a decade ago, and overall, only a small proportion of people with diabetes are simultaneously meeting the key goals of glycemic control, blood pressure control, and control of high cholesterol," says study senior author Elizabeth Selvin, Ph.D., MPH.
Diabetes mostly occurs in the form of type 2 diabetes which is strongly related to diet and lifestyle factors. The disease affects more than 34 million, or 13 percent, of the U.S. adult population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and represents an ongoing public health crisis. By causing chronic high blood sugar and associated high blood pressure and high cholesterol, diabetes increases the risks of other serious diseases, especially cardiovascular disease and complications, including amputation and kidney disease. The traditional "ABCs" of diabetes care are to reduce chronic high blood sugar—usually measured with the hemoglobin A1C test—to keep blood pressure below hypertensive levels, and to control cholesterol levels.

Brought mine down from 6.0 to 5.7 or 5.6 with a supplement called berberine. Just now starting a trial with another supplement: Alpha lipoic acid. No self-discipline here to change diet. But no sugar drinks or fatty meat, at least.
Obesity will save Medicare
There is not full agreement on what type 2 diabetes is. Iwas first diagnosed when the allowable blood sugar level was raised from 126 to 140 (10%) . Back in 2017 while recovering from surgery, they set that limit at 155.
Also, the target A1c is now raised to 7.0.
The disease is totally a function of blood test numbers.

Funny how all the natural stuff is on the perimeter and the processed and boxed stuff is up and down all the aisles. Done the same in all the grocery stores. Must be some efficiency thing or psychology thing.

My first job after I turned 16 was as a stocker in a new grocery store. I did the fresh stuff and 66 years ago, that was that store’s layout then,
Basically every grocery store in our city with 6 different owners/corps uses this floor stocking model.
Since, my wife and I only buy from the natural/fresh stocking, it makes shopping a lot faster and easier. Frozen foods, stock and paper products are separate in the store we use.
Our favorite store starts off with the fresh produce as you enter and go right. There is a deli at the end of that aisle and then to the left about 50 stands with fresh fruit and veggies down the way with one to two restocker all day. The first food items after the produce/veggies are a staffed butcher shop with fresh everything.
Next is an aisle that takes one from the SW to the SE end of the store with pre packed meat/chicken on one side and canned fruit and veggies/soups on the other side. Milk and dairy products to that end and a refrigerated section for chilled wines, beer and non alcohol drinks.
The rest of the store has the packaged junk with impossible to pronounce ingredients.
It takes me about 15 to 20 minutes to buy our weekly groceries and to stay in the healthy zones. There is a larger store owned by the same corp. in town. We prefer the smaller one for the planning and getting around easier.
