Reinforcement of oak table for holding newt tank completed!
Vanity Post | 6/20/21 | Me, Myself, & I

Posted on 06/10/2021 7:45:56 PM PDT by EinNYC

With the help of a local handyman, I was able to see my concept of how to reinforce the oak table to be able to hold my newt tank transition from the drawing board to reality. I incorporated some of the ideas some generous FReepers suggested, and it all came together. While he was drilling holes in the flat steel bars I'd purchased and cutting them to size, I had the actual terrarium tank on my dining table where I could repair some of the caulking on the bottom seam.

Ta-da!

Original oak legs on tank.

New black steel legs.

Without the gecko tank underneath, to show the structure of the reinforcements (there is a horizontal steel bar extending between the steel legs, right up against the bottom of the oak table). And there is a flat steel bar screwed between the steel legs to prevent future splaying. There is also a 1/8" thick rubber mat put under the tank and the outer extension of the cross-shaped bracket which came as an optional add-on to the steel legs was bent upward 90 degrees, providing protection against the tank slipping sideways and protecting my eye from getting poked out if I bent down too near the tank.

With the gecko tank slid back under the oak table.

Well, as they say, a person should always get their newts lined up in a row.

Looks great.

I’m busy installing rain barrels for rain we don’t have in California - we are having an “exceptional drought” right now.

I need to learn how to make them myself, my city charges $60 each for them.

Love do-it-yerself projects.

I forgot to add this comment about Geckos. I loved them. When I lived in the Middle East they were in my house and would climb the walls and ceiling in defiance of gravity. They were bug eating machines. They were my friends. I had about 3 or 4 that lived in my house. I feed them nothing as they ate the bugs. I did leave water out for them.

After Georgiaโ€™s performance in this last election, Iโ€™m ready to put Gingrich in there.

"Table"

Looks like a dresser to me.

Adding your terrarium plus the water weight makes it very top heavy with a high center of balance.

How much effort would it take for a kid (Or adult) to pull on the top drawer and crash it all down?

Did you anchor the dresser and the above tanks to wall studs?

From what I've read, they do an excellent job of clearing out any roaches you might have.

In the article I read about this, the only the issue the writer had was being disturbed by the occasional sound of chewing in the dead of night. (That, and he would find the gecko in the most unusual places on his walls or ceilings.)

Like you, he always left water out for it.

Just come around that corner from the other room and hit that top tank with your shoulder........

Here's your new tank!

You're going to need a bigger table.

Oh, I may have heard you wrong.
