The two women were visiting the Manialtepec lagoon near the surf and beach destination of Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca state when the attack occurred late Sunday, reported Said Silva, the head of the local civil defense office.

The lagoon is known for its stands of mangroves and for brackish waters that turn bioluminescent at some times of the year.

The BBC reported that the women are twin sisters Melissa and Georgia Laurie, 28, who had been volunteering and traveling in Mexico.

Silva said witnesses told officials the two Britons were swimming when one was attacked by a crocodile. The second woman was injured trying to assist the first.

Melissa remained in a critical condition because her bite wounds had become infected and she developed sepsis.

About thirty years back supported U.S. drilling operations under charter to Mexico in Campeche Bay. Operated out of Frontera, west of Del Carmen, on the Usumacinta River. Went along the river south of town a good way, but missed the crocs if any were there.

a guide that had no permit, takes the girls to a place known for crocodiles and off limits to swimming. Why was that? I read the one sister has now developed sepsis from her bite wounds and is not doing well at all.

Play stupid games; win stupid prizes. Congrats. Love is tough and even tougher if you’re stupid.

I had read another article where the girls asked the tour guide if it was safe to swim there, and he said yes, that there were no crocodiles there.

One has to be very careful in Mexico.

Florida’s gun laws? Wanna bet. There are lots of ways to put gators and sharks down. Same as assholes one the streets. In fact some work for both.

As George Castanza might say, “The lagoon was dark and angry that day”.

Not many folks carry when piddling around in the salt-water. Crocs and ‘gators are different. And crocs are making a come-back. I’d keep my head on a swivel in the Keys, and up both coasts.

Carrying a bang stick, shark dart etc ain’t to hard if you’re in a bad neighborhood. You have to consider the terrain. Depends on who you’re dealing with. Grizzly country requires its special methods. It’s their world, we enter at or own risk. Awareness, soft approach, caution, and willingness to back away is good. Then sometimes things just go to hell.

And if you’re noodling around for rock lobsters under bridges, you’re going to carry? Alligators are bad enough, but they generally stay out of salt water.

Probably just a matter of time in Florida. 🐊

Crocs already live in the FL Keys - Only place in the world where Alligators and Crocodiles share the same space:

American Crocodile

Never saw either. Crocs are really taking advantage of the warm effluence at the Turkey Point Nuclear Plant. There’s a lot a human water activity in the area, too.

‘Gators were and are potentially anywhere in fresh water.

"Georgia punched the crocodile repeatedly as it came back three times to attack, while friends of theirs went to get help,”

Enough praise cannot be given to the hero sister.

Notice the"friends", unassed the scene.

My in laws lived on a lake in Sanibel where the alligators were used to the workmen feeding them. When they started watching my little kids playing in the back yard I moved the kids to the front yard.
