There’s no prison (yet) for climate criminals, but if there was, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro would have a spider-infested cell all to himself. Now that Trump is gone, Bolsonaro - a.k.a. “The Trump of the Tropics” or “Captain Chain Saw” - is the most dangerous climate denier in the world. In his two years as president, Bolsonaro has presided over the destruction of about 10,000 square miles of the Brazilian rainforest, one of the most precious ecosystems on the planet. And like Trump, Bolsonaro is proud of his efforts to f... up the planet. If people were so concerned about climate change, he once suggested, they could eat less and “poop every other day” to save the Earth. At Joe Biden’s climate summit in April, Bolsonaro talked a good game, committing to ending illegal deforestation by 2030. He also moved up the date for becoming carbon neutral from 2060 to 2050, and promised to double the budget for enforcing the forest’s protections. But according to a number of sources and published accounts, Brazil’s minister of the environment, Ricardo Salles, made the deal more explicit in backstage negotiations with the U.S. and other countries: Pay us $1 billion and we’ll cut deforestation by 40 percent for one year.

“It’s extortion,” argues Marcio Astrini, the executive secretary of the Brazilian Climate Observatory, an alliance of 63 civil society organizations. “Bolsonaro and his team are saying, ‘If you don’t give us the money, we don’t know what will happen to the Amazon.’ Everyone knows Bolsonaro is not interested in the climate. He is only interested in using the climate to extort money to use for himself and his friends.”

Jeff Goodell was born in Palo Alto, California. He grew up in Sunnyvale and worked briefly at Apple Computer in the early 1980s. He graduated from University of California, Berkeley, in 1984, then helped edit Zyzzyva, a literary magazine in San Francisco. He moved to New York City and attended graduate school at Columbia University, where he received an M.F.A. in 1990.

In 2010 he published How to Cool the Planet: Geoengineering and the Audacious Quest to Fix Earth’s Climate[1] about geoengineering, global warming, and climate change mitigation. Enviro-Nazis want to force Brazil not to cut down their trees. In Europe all the trees were cut down multiple times, beginning about 1000 years ago. In the UK all the trees were cut down to make the supports for the trenches used in France in WWI. All the trees in Michigan were cut down to re-build Chicago after the 1871 great fire. The UK shut down a coal plant and replaced it with one which burns wood pellets imported mostly from the US (DRAX), that’s how much they care about forests. Bolsonaro is an honest man who replaced the most vile criminal, Lula, who embezzled billions from the Brazilian people. His predecessor, Dilma Roussof, is a convicted bank robber. You can’t make this stuff up.
