One Richmond family got a shocking delivery last month when 80,000 pennies were dumped on their front lawn. Now, they're using the money to help those in need.
"I just turned 18. When I was in the middle of class, my dad came by. He had rented a trailer," Avery Sanford, a Deep Run High School senior, said. "He pulled up in front of the house and turned the trailer on so it dumped out all the pennies on the grass and my mom came out and was like, 'What are you dumping in my yard?' She didn't know who it was until he shouted, 'It's your final child support payment."
The act had an impact on the teenager.
"It's not just my mom he's trying to embarrass, it's also me and my sister and it's upsetting that he didn't consider that before he did that," Sanford said.
Once the pennies were picked up, Sanford and her mom decided to turn a bad situation into a positive one.
Every penny of Avery's last child support payment will be donated to Safe Harbor, a domestic abuse center.
"Turning around and donating that money to moms and children in need, I feel like that really turns this situation into a positive. You can learn from it," Avery said.

So, your sister in law didn’t have to buy food, rent, and utilities? Child support is to help with the cost of raising a child, including all of the above.
1982 and earlier.....
About $2,360 in copper

I wish I could agree with you, but speaking as a woman, if women wanted to be treated like men and act like it, and especially if they provoke men expecting men not to hit them because they are women, they deserve what they get.
Women who want preferential treatment need to act like it.
I have NO use for women who take advantage of men. It’s beyond despicable.
Kudos to the man with enough self-control to never hit a woman, but honestly, act like a man and expect to be treated like one.
So there’s no sympathy from this woman for women who deliberately provoke men.
if anyone is acting like a petulant child it’s you for rushing to judgment without knowing the facts of what caused their breakup...
I paid $1000 month plus medical insurance (one child). I never even considered missing a payment. When I got remarried after 10 years my ex got mad and took me back to court for more. I hired Perry Mason’s grandson for my lawyer, or at least you would have thought so. He ate her alive in court. She turned into a defendant’s lawyer’s dream witness; she got sarcastic, completely bitchy, and couldn’t answer simple questions. My child support was actually reduced by the time it was over. I believe to this day the judge was pissed that she was wasting his time on case with a man consistently paying $1000 a month when he usually sees cases of men owing thousands of dollars.
Respectfully…you are missing my point.
My point is that his relationship with his Ex is irrelevant. He fathered children. He is morally bound to support them.
This is about child support, not alimony.
respectfully... you’re missing the point that he financially supported them until he was obligated to do so...
enjoy the rest of your day...
If the kids are housed, fed, clothed, have basic utilities, transportation, and medical and dental care, it seems to me obvious that the child support of that amount is indeed being spent.
Child support in the tens of thousands is ridiculous IMO. Call it alimony that is what it is.
If the above basic needs are not being met sue for custody due to neglect.
Idiot. With the price of copper, that was probably close to $120k worth of it.
No - $800.00 dollars, do the math.
“There us NEVER a reason for a man to hit a female”
That’s what Mom use to tell me and my sisters took full advantage of it.
But the pennies on the lawn? That’s a Bush league move. And why dump on the kid?
Obviously this guy did it for attention. Why the rage at paying child support? I never understood that. Who else is supposed to pay for their support?
how did his dumping pennies on the lawn exhibit rage?
it was his final child support payment and he obviously taught his kids to count their pennies and inadvertently taught them to donate to charity at the same time while they probably didn’t even realize it...
there’s always 3 sides to every story...
“And some women are really, really good at it and make life hell for the men later.”
What you say is true abt some women and the Dr Jekyll / Mr Hyde personality. I wasn’t condemning him for the relationship, but after it was over ... cutting his losses and get away as far and as fast as possible. His penny payment method probably was not the first time he did something to excess with his ex. Even if she is a Jekyll-Hyde, he should be thankful it is over.
Post 15. Do the reading.
I have a buddy that makes good mone but not great. He pays 33% of his gros pay in child support. His ex married a doctor drives a Mercedes vacations everywhere. He is being screwed since she “doesn’t work”. On the positive side he does have the kids about 75% of the time. He and the kids would be better off financially if he had all his money and the kids full time.
“...At least until recently, it was generally the woman who chose the man/men she was going to associate with. Then we got to listen to her complaints about her choices.”
It’s not like the guy had no choice once chosen, at least where and when I grew up. But I get your point, if she did not choose him, “his choice” was irrelevant.
Yes, all the complaints. Too much fantasy island out there. Want a decent, hardworking, responsible, honest guy that settles down, takes care of everything, loves family, etc etc .. and then when that guy shows up he isn’t quite the right one, because she wants the bad guy (with prison time a plus).
Reminds me of the Tom Petty song, “She’s a Woman in Love (It Just Ain’t You)”. J Giles was more cynical about it, “Love Stinks”.
“...it was his final child support payment and he obviously taught his kids to count their pennies and inadvertently taught them to donate to charity at the same time while they probably didn’t even realize it..”
That guy should hire you to be his lawyer. Very creative defense you have there.
thank you, but i don’t have a law degree...
my father was a high ranking police official and i learned a few things from him throughout the course of my life...
Never said it was rage. I said it was childish.
There are no sides to that.
I think you are bringing some personal baggage into this discussion. Some things are immutable. Taking responsibility for your offspring is one of those things.
