A retired nun who worked as a principal of a Catholic elementary school in Torrance has agreed to plead guilty in connection with stealing more than $835,000 in school funds to pay for personal expenses, including gambling trips, federal officials announced Tuesday.

She agreed to plead guilty to the two charges, which carry a maximum sentence of 40 years in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Central District of California.

She had been responsible for charitable donations, as well as funds the school received to pay for tuition and fees, officials said.

Officials said she diverted school funds into the convent account and the savings account and then used the diverted cash to “pay for expenses that the order would not have approved, much less paid for, including large gambling expenses incurred at casinos and certain credit card charges,” officials said.

I agree, what happened to accountability? My businesses had more than one person keeping an eye on the cookie jars.

She probably controlled the books for the bank accounts to which she shifted the funds. When she retired the school suddenly had a windfall from fees and the like, since she was not siphoning them off!

“someone sucks at accounting. that shouldn’t be possible.”

My idiot brother and his wife managed to embezzle $130,000 from a small church in less than 3 years.

They both went to prison.

Sadly, lots of charities—churches, church schools, PTAs, Little Leagues—think “trust” is sufficient, until they no longer do....I don’t donate unless they’re annually audited by a licensed CPA.

The long time city comptroller of Dixon, Illinois, Rita Crundwell, had been embezzling for almost 30 years. She took a three month vacation, and the city clerk filled in for her. The clerk realized something was wrong with the books and reported it to the mayor. Crundwell is now serving 20 years.

Not surprised....never wise to keep the same people handing revenue for long. Temptation can override trust in a heartbeat and often does.
