I was 16 in ‘72. The two things I remember most were Tina Turner and halter tops.
My era
It was similar everywhere then but SoCal was the holy grail no question
Then it was you could hang out as kids in places....parks or shopping centers
You could drink at 18
Smoke at whatever
Much freer nation
I heard a Gen Y mom yesterday crowing how she thought it was a frat thing kids can’t hang out
I said yes. Karen..they all come to my house now
She was a Kali transplant ironically
The mommifikation of our nation in the arena where kids have parents...
Today the cops literally stand by and watch violent felonies taking place right in front of them. Even when they burn down their police stations! Back then they’d break out the oak night sticks and bring out the dogs.
What we have today is an utter nightmare compared to what things were like in the 60s and 70s.
THEN the Amish came in and messed it up, everywhere
That’s a haul
350-400 each way....
On US70
Or Eye 40
I still drive that annually from Nashville...I can make Amarillo first nite if I leave early
They used to cruise down Central Ave in Phoenix in 72, I was there.
they had a gas price war there.
the usual 28 cent gas went down to 19 cents.
and they still provided free service including windows, gas, tires, oil, water, tranny fluid, hose and belts checks.
I know because i worked it.
also they kept giving Blue Chip or Green Stamps. AND free china dishes or cups or saucers your choice.
when we were not dependent on enemy Muslim dictatorships for our fuel.
now under Biden we will be dependent again.
premium gas today was 4.69
you serve yourself
and no free anything
Yeah but a lot of them do not look like that now. They fat now.
moved for the west san Fernando valley to san diego in spring of 1968.
If Trump hadn’t been denied his win, I agree that even bigger changes for the better were coming. Even the RINOs don’t want Americans to be free and happy. They just want to saddle them with chains and debt.
In the Days of the Freedom Machines
(I don't mean this as an insult by the way; I understand that this doesn't included everyone, and I have no doubt that many people who came of age during that time lived a hard life. But as an entire generation, they walked into a time where the heavy lifting had already been done for them. They simply didn't understand the efforts that had been made by their parents and grandparents to endure the depression and the world wars, and to bring this country to where it was when they grew up.)
I have a friend how just sold his home in San Diego, close to El Cajon. He’s another who’s leaving the state.
Thank you
Some folks here will scold whatever is posted
They can’t help it
The era here which I grew up in was wonderful despite those singular events which affected few people
Worst part of 72 was Vietnamization whereby we were giving up and leaving Indochina having sacrificed 60,000 kids for a just cause politicians and some flag officers would not allow to be won.
Disgusting.
That other stuff the poo poo party brings up simply did not affect most folks....even though I too was shocked by the Manson murders and am to this day
Btw...the turmoil of the 60s happened for one major reason
WWII and our resounding victory
Come home
Screw like bunnies
Tons of youth
Genie out of bottle..
I was the bubble of the boom....1957.
I think when I was 15 mean age was 25-27
Imagine that....
It’s I think nearly 40 now and think what it would be without so many brown immigrants having so many kids...white girls can’t be burdened...career and metero spouses....low T
It was a great time to be alive...early 70s...I loved it
That’s why your Mustangs hood sheet metal is all floppy and oil canned.
Off the car dude!
“...they still provided free service including windows, gas, tires, oil, water, tranny fluid, hose and belts checks.
I know because i worked it.”
In my pump jockey days we called that an “island overhaul.” It was usually the same customers ... come in and buy $2.00 worth of gas and request most of the services you listed - and don’t forget to check the battery fluid level.
Yep, even with the hippies in the 60s and 70s...CA was paradise back then compared to now. Now it’s just flat out scary in every direction.
my parents bought a house in san diego in 68, my brother still lives there. 68 to 80 were great times to be in san diego, small town feel, 380,000 people. get anyplace in 20 minutes. rode bikes to downtown alone..
Cruising the “strip”, the “boulevard”, or the “ave” went well into the 1990s in most places and still happens in some although the Internet, mobile phones, and social media make it less of a required venue for being a teenager.
My parents bought a brand new home on one income and the total price they paid for the home,((Listen to this)), was less than what people pay today in 3 or 4 months of mortgage payments!
Every time I think of that it blows me away.
