Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said he will vote against a sweeping election reform overhaul bill, dubbed the For The People Act, putting the fate of the legislation in jeopardy in the evenly split Senate.
In an op-ed published early Sunday morning in the Charleston Gazette-Mail, Manchin, one of the Democratic caucus's most conservative members, zeroed in on the partisan nature of the legislation, which has not attracted any Republican support.
"I believe that partisan voting legislation will destroy the already weakening blinds of our democracy, and for that reason, I will vote against the For The People Act," Manchin wrote.
"The truth, I would argue, is that voting and election reform that is done in a partisan manner will all but ensure partisan divisions continue to deepen," he added.
Manchin also said he "will not vote to weaken or eliminate the filibuster," which a number of leading Democrats have suggested in order to pass election reform.
He said he will "seek bipartisan compromise no matter how difficult and to develop the political bonds that end divisions and help unite the country we love."
The House in March passed The For The People Act in a 220 to 210 vote. No House Republicans supported the measure, and one Democrat voted against the legislation.
The bill would require states to offer mail-in ballots, a minimum of 15 days of early voting and online and same-day voter registration. Additionally, it calls for the creation of independent commissions to draw congressional districts in an effort to put an end to partisan gerrymandering.

Someone said that politicians don’t work for the peoples’ interests, they work for their own interests. Manchin has serious faults, but he wants to stay in office, and he knows he’ll be toast unless he votes the way West Virginians want. “Montani semper libre” isn’t just a platitude in WV.
The Biden dickwads want to consolidate their stolen power? What a laugh.
And they think that last Jan. 6 was an “Insurrection?”
Man they are cruising for a real one, and their heads will be rolling down the Capitol steps.
America is going to de-elect these touch holes so hard that it will knock them clear into Guatemala to look at their root causes as a group.
Good news... good news...

“If he holds fast on this (and the filibuster), Manchin and Murkowski might just as well switch parties.”
Nope not on this bill, even the RINOs are totally against it.
As conservative as Manchin appears, he’s still not to the right of either Murkowski or Collins, at least on any issue that I know of.
“Did Murkowski come out in favor of this nightmare?”
Nope, all 50 Republicans oppose it, including Romney and Collins.
I call it the Cheat Forever act.
She has the drunk Eskimo vote nailed down. Gonna be a tough out.
If Manchin were serious, he would switch parties in order to put the majority in the hands of Republicans and prevent junk like this from coming to the floor. Not that McConnell is any prize, but at least it would take control out of Schumer’s hands.
Manchin’s votes so far have supported Biden 100 percent. He always plays this game where he counts on certain Republicans to vote with the Dems and then he jumps up and says he voted against something but that his voted didn’t make a difference in the outcome.
He is pathetic, but he manages to fool many people into thinking he is a moderate. Manchin took an oath to uphold the Constitution, not moderately support it
Interesting. HR1 isn’t used anywhere in the article.
Go figure.
Not so sure this state is quite as conservative (politically) as you think. Granted, it has not voted for a RAT presidential candidate since Clinton '96, but it had no problems reelecting Rockefeller and Byrd several times. Tomblin was elected Gov. in 11 and 12. Trump got some massive majorities in 16 and 20, but Justice got elected in 16 and 20 (this time as an (R)) and Manchin got reelected in 18.
Do NOT make the same mistake the MSM makes by thinking (R) = Conservative....especially here in WV. Party brands, both R and D are applied with a running iron.
Dems are moderating with an eye to the midterms. Control of the House will boil down to a few right of center districts. Dems know they are winning the demographic war, mostly control the courts and don’t need HR1.
I’ve noticed that CNN has had a daily diatribe article on Manchin for the past two weeks.
The knives are definitely out…
His wife will lose her Cushy Biden appointment Job
If Manchin or Sinema somehow does cave, it'll immediately get shot down in the courts.
The Constitution clearly gives state legislatures power to set elections.
This bill is doomed, one way or the other.
“ This legislation is unconstitutional.
If Manchin or Sinema somehow does cave, it’ll immediately get shot down in the courts.”
I appreciate your optimism, but……
