Cape Cod’s great white shark numbers increase with researchers tagging more of the predators than ever( tagging thru 2020)

The population of Atlantic great white sharks around Massachusetts ’ Cape Cod peninsula has increased significantly, researchers say.

A total of 118 individual great white sharks were detected in 2020 off the coast by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy , up from only 11 in 2013.

And the total number of recorded shark detections in the same period has jumped from 10,803 to 134,631.

Scientists say that back in 2010 only three acoustic receivers were used, compared to 65 last year.

“It’s important to remember that the receivers can only detect sharks tagged with acoustic transmitters, and there are still a lot of white sharks out there that haven’t been tagged,” Megan Winton, research scientist with the AWSC, told the Boston Herald .

“As scientists, we use the data collected from tagged sharks to give us an idea of what the population is doing as a whole.

“People should think of the data provided by the logbook the same way – as a proxy for shark activity off the coast.”

A total of 231 individual great white sharks have been tagged with transmitters since 2010.

But Ms Winton said that researchers have documented more than 500 of the sharks in the area. Using underwater video footage.

The average length of the tagged sharks is 11.6ft long and shark activity is greatest where seal density is at its highest.

“When you look at the detection data, there are two immediately clear takeaways: white shark activity is highest along Cape Cod, and the Outer Cape in particular, where seal densities are highest, and white sharks have been detected all along the coast of Massachusetts,” Ms Winton said.

“They don’t occur exclusively off of Cape Cod.”

Over the last four years the most shark detections have been in the month of August and the shark season extends until October,

In 2020 a total of 10 people around the world were killed by sharks, with just three in the United States, according to the International Shark Attack File.

This is a statistical information about the tagging effort of white sharks in Mass. thru last year, 2020.

We can expect a big white shark news season in New England this year. There are about ten more biological agencies that have now entered the picture of studying white sharks in 2021 in New England.

The first confirmed white shark sighting of 2021 should be in a week or so.-Tom

So it’s not the number of sharks that’s increasing, it’s the number of tagged sharks.

As long as the sharks know that the liberals and cucks taste better than Patriots, well...I don’t see a problem.

There’s an old deranged gigolo kite surfer - Jean Fraude I think he goes by. Go get him first sharks.

Those people need real jobs. Tagging sharks is silly. Sharks are gonna shark.

Humans are aliens when swimming in the ocean. Not our natural environment. Sharks are effective at keeping the alien population under control in their environment.

I wonder if the spring liberal lemming exodus from Boston is predicted to be larger this year? Or is Boston finally going to fall into the sea?

Apparently, sharks used to be common there before seals were over hunted a long time ago. With few seals, the sharks went away. But in recent years there have been many efforts to bring back the seals. So, surprise!, the sharks are coming back as well.

The Oh Daaaaa alert.

Howie Carr and Jeff Kuhner have opined and made sport of this for some time now. Great save the Seals, they are cute for the tourist in MA, to look at and take pictures.

You big dummies, who the heck to do think eats the Seals! Daaaa, the Sharks!

Thank G-d I escaped that State...

Good Berry Clifford found his boat before the seal infestation.

Barry Clifford discovered the wreck of the treasure laden "WHYDAH" in July 1984, just north of Marconi Beach, Wellfleet Mass. (Cape Cod)

So Barry had plenty of time to retrieve the treasure and artifacts and start a Pirate Museum on Cape Cod, since the white shark infestation in that area didn't start until about 1984.

I'll bet many Freepers have visited that Pirate Museum. -Tom

Got to make a date correction; in the above post I said "since the white shark infestation in that area didn't start until about 1984." That should read 2004 instead of 1984.-Tom
