The Tiananmen Square Massacre: From China's Authoritarian Roots to the Iconic "Tank Man"

China is often described as the next superpower to top America within the next few decades. At first glance, such an assertion makes sense. The country’s vast geography, natural resources, rich history, and tech-savvy populace puts it in a position to thrive in the 21st century. However, China’s rise as a superpower is not one of an overnight success, nor is it filled with pretty rainbows.

Indeed, China is one of the world’s longest lasting civilizations, with cultural and political traditions that have been passed down to succeeding generations effortlessly. With such a vast history, China had gone through its own zeniths and nadirs. As is the nature of any civilization. However, China’s modern history has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least.

Despite having a massive formal governing apparatus that would put many empires to shame, China has not always had full control of its territorial jurisdiction. Once European powers reached Chinese shores in search of riches, they soon wanted their piece of pie. That meant slowly whittling away at Chinese territory. As the first movers in the Age of Exploration, the Portuguese and their missionaries colonized Macau.

Although the Portuguese’s venture was not exclusively about riches, it inspired other European actors such as the British to go and exploit China’s vast resources. Naturally, the Qing dynasty and Britain’s interests clashed once the British wanted to expand trade inside the country. What was originally a trade dispute between a Qing government wanting to maintain trade that overwhelmingly favored China, soon turned into a full-blown conflict as seen in the Opium War.

I just read an article that Bing has scrubbed all images of Tank Man from its online searches. Google still will provide that image, but not Bing.

I read the article, but just barely. Don’t understand why Bing won’t display that image. I imagine they are very CCP friendly.

Don’t believe everything you read:

“Tank man China” search produced multiple images at Bing.

It apparently did happen for a time and was then restored.

If China had the 2nd amendment they’d be a free country now.

I always thought Tank Man got squished but saw the whole video for the first time recently. So Tank Man stood in front of the tank, which stopped. Then eventually he jumped up on the tank, it looks like someone in the tank opened the hatch and told him to get away. Then when he jumped back off the tank it started to move forward and then he ran in front of it again and the tanks stopped again. After a few seconds, though, a couple of other protesters ran up and dragged him away from the tank.

They were not ‘protestors’, they were plain clothes police who beat him to death.

Not Disney. No movie ever. Any putative movie would be in the horror category.

Wikipedia indicates it’s not clear what happened to the guy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_Man

The guys who dragged him away in the video sure looked like other protesters, but who knows.

If you watch and read the links I provided earlier, it is clearly stated that they were plain clothes security police.

Security police, to this day, beat people dead for lessor actions. Never use wiki when far better sources are available for the clicking!

The Chinese have a whole mechanized army (literally) that are all security police; they were massed outside of Hong Kong and were the first in when it fell.

It’s romantic to hope that Tank Man escaped detection, but I suspect the communists spent considerable time and effort locating and reeducating and killing so potent a symbol of resistance.

The Communists were particularly triggered by the protestors displaying their very own Statue of Liberty.

Liberty offends the ChiComs even more than liberty offends the Democrat Party. And that's a lot.
