HIGHLY IMPORTANT NEWS: Attack on the Rebel Batteries at Aquia Creek; Important Forward Movements in Virginia; An Advance Towards Manassas Gap Junction (6/1/1861)

WASHINGTON, Friday, May 31.

It was stated in this correspondence yesterday that a number of vessels were then fitting out here for some destination not publicly disclosed. The following dispatch, received at the Navy-yard between four and five o'clock this afternoon, affords an explanation:

"The Keystone State reports that in passing Acquia, at noon, the Freeborn and Anacosta were engaging the battery at Acquia Creek, with success. Shall I send the Pocahontas with her ten-inch gun to assist?"

This is signed by Capt. DAHLGREEN, the commander at the Navy-yard.

Immediately on receipt of this dispatch the Navy Department ordered two men-of-war down to support Capt. WARD.

It is of interest to know that Acquia Creek is 55 miles from Washington, and is the terminus of the Richmond, Fredericksburgh and Potomac Railroad. Vessels can approach within musket range of the battery.
